A strong ale, brewed to the 1938 strength and using the same ingredients as the original best selling bottled beer of the Black Eagle Brewery. Made with pale and crystal malts and huge charge of Kent Goldings hops.

500ml bottle. Hazy, dark golden amber colour with small, frothy, fading, off-white head. Malty aroma with toffee notes, some malt-spiciness with hints of lovage, soup cube, marmite, dusty dry fruit, port. Taste is minimally sweet malty, some malt-spiciness, again hints of toffee, marmite, port, raisins. Not fully unbefitting in its shopworn, old-fashioned style considering the maintenance of traditionalism one may encounter at least to a minor degree at Oxbridge. Nice to revisit an historic Ale for catching a glimpse of it... once.

Cask at the William Webb Ellis (JDW), Twickenham - 14/04/12. Dark amber colour with small white head. Caramel, malt dominated nose with background fruit. Taste follows on with a touch of biscuit, more dark fruits come forward. Higher end of medium bodied with a dry finish.

Cask at the Wharf. A creamy off-white to light beige head sis on to of a clear, amber body. Some curtains show up after a while. Mostly fruity on the nose, a touch of liquorice shows up, along with a hint of roasted malts and some dried apricots. Medium body, quite a lot of carbonation for a cask beer, still soft. Liquorice, some roasted malts and quite a lot of fruitiness in the flavour. Dried apricots, some notes of raisins and a little citrusy hint too. Pleasant bitterness, both initially and in the end. Certainly a nice one, could readily drink a few of these. 120816

[5/12/12] Cask at Charlie’s Bar in Copenhagen. Clear amber. Earthy hops aroma with some somewhat toasty malt. Flavor has some mellow maltiness, a bit bready and toasty, with a bit of sweetness at first, but quickly turns bitter and hoppy, earthy and citric, to create a mouth-drying finish. Silky mouthfeel. Very nice.
