First Trappist Beer made in Spain, first brewed in 2016. Triple blonde with a 7-degree graduation. Elaborated from a careful selection of barley malt, hops, yeast and water, and with a second fermentation in the bottle, following the centuries-old tradition of the Trappist master brewers.

30/VIII/16 - bottle from Gents Bierfestival @ home - BB: 29/VI/17 (2016-923)

Clear orange beer, creamy off-white head, pretty stable, non adhesive. Aroma: pretty fruity, peaches, apricot, apricot jam, little spicy, hint of bread yeast, some citrus. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: sweet start, malty (no cow fodder though), caramel, bit sugary, some ripe banana. Aftertaste: very sweet, yeasty, sugary malts, some more ripe banana, not much else. Lacking complexity and depth.

One of the newest trappist beers, already tasted at GBF last year but now revisiting to see if it has evolved a bit since then; still brewed at MarPal (so not within the monastery’s own premises) so still no ’official’ trappist beer and not yet carrying the authentic trappist product logo, at least not the sample I have here in front of me. Egg-white, moussy, bit irregular head lacing in ’dots’ and leaving some flats islands in the middle, quite well-retaining on the edge; lightly hazy ’old gold’ robe with warmer peachy hue, haziness in part coming from a suspension of tiny yeast flocks, which turn into an equal ’mist’ as more sediment goes into the glass, with a more equal peach colour. Aroma of honey, dried apricot, banana, almond, some ’rusty’ oxidation setting in, even a whiff of chicken soup, gari, orange peel and even mandarin flesh, cheese spread, red raspberry, warm apple cake, marmelade, pear drops, white bread dough, sweetclover, honeysuckle, soap, popcorn, sugared tea. Sweet onset, lots of bubblegummy banana ester, apricot, ripe pear and candied orange accents, vague sourishness accentuated by quite pronounced carbonation, a bit numbing even, but sweetness still prevailing, to a honeyish extent - clearly ’sweet tripel’ was the aim here, with a residual sweetness best compared with classic Belgian honey beer. This sweetness, along with the banana ester and some spicy phenols, continues over a caramelly and lightly bready malt sweet middle; malt sweetness, traces of banana and honey keep ruling the finish, where only a light amount of somewhat grassy, bit earthy and even already very slightly ’cheesy’ hop bitterishness is put into play. Orange and banana flavors in the end alongside some warming, wodka-like alcohol which nevertheless manages to avoid wryness; spicy phenolic effects strengthen as more of the sediment goes in (as well as a bready, earthy yeast effect). Retronasally, I still get some of the onsetting ’rusty’ oxidation, making the whole thing less pleasant than it could have been. Residual honeyish-sugary sweetness remains and even sticks a bit to the throat - too much so even for a sweet-oriented tripel. Probably a bottle from one of the earliest batches, seemingly more ’orangey’ and sweeter than what I remember from GBF, but already suffering a bit from oxidation - too early so, I cannot imagine a white Chimay or Westmalle Tripel being so oxidated after one or two years. Apparently trappist monasteries throughout the western world are, one by one, joining the present-day beer craze, but none of these new ones are either capable of achieving the quality standards set by the classic Belgian ones, or finding connection with international beer trends in the modern world, therefore necessarily stranding in mediocrity. This is a sweet, soapy, banana estery and coriandered tripel like there are too many already in Belgium and the fact that it is almost a trappist beer, adds little to my appreciation. A bit pointless really (and this really is not Belgian beer chauvinism); see the young Spanish craft breweries for much more exciting creations.

Thank you for sharing! Sampled 330 ml. bottle @ Gents Bierfestival 2016. Hazy orange, little white head. Nose is dull stale butter, oddly oxidation, cardboard, sugar, almond, touch marzipan. Taste is cardboard, sugar, sweet almond & some butter, candy caramel. Not good & strange mess. Body is some butter, caramel and almond. Puzzling & not really all that good in my opinion. Yet another new Trappist brewery, the quality is not here in my opinion, one of these days the brand will stretch a bit thinner I am certain.

Small white head over faintly veiled copper-ochre beer. Old bread, oxydation, stale. Old bread, stale, citruspeel. Medium bodied, quite slick, some alcohol. Disappointing... supposed to be a trappist at that!

Bottle from store at monastery. Lote 19, best before march 2017.

This beer is as of yet, the first and only trappist beer in Spain. Now brewed at Marpal, but apparently brewing is planned to move into or take place very near the monastery.

Side note: the associated monastery of the Cistercian Order is a gem to visit, played an essential role in Spanish history, and only a short distance from the capital city of Burgos.

Alas, the beer itself. Slightly hazy dark golden coloured with a medium-sized off-white head. Nose is very flowery and fruity, oranges and hint of tangerines. Slightly caramel malts. Flavour is caramel malts, very fruity and flowery, with oranges and slightly spicy. This tripel is relatively soft, light, and fruity, with a subdued bitterness and a slight sweetness. Medium carbonation. Very well drinkable.
