Hofstetten’s Granitbier (granite beer) has been a household name in the region for years. When we decided we wanted to continue building on the “Granite” theme in 2008, the logical next step, of course, was to make it stronger! Hence, our GRANIT BOCKBIER.

The beauty was that we already had everything we needed in our brewhouse from 1929.
Primary fermentation takes place in 120-year-old granite vats, thus connecting this beer to its Stone Age roots.

The Granitbock’s unmistakable flavor comes from granite stones that are heated over an open fire until red hot and then thrown into the beer, caramelizing the sugar in the wort. Once it cools, our classically cultured yeast is then added to the vats.

Though the process is quite laborious, the resulting beer is laden with caramel and roasted malt aromas unlike those in any other bock. We then lager the beer for another 6 months in our vaulted lager keller and fill it into bottles without any further processing.

We leave it unfiltered to ensure none of the wonderful flavors developed during the brewing process are lost. For the beer lover with a cool dark place in their homes, this beer can easily be aged for another 3 years.

Pours mahogany into a shaker. Off-white head with little retention recedes to skim surface leaving no lacing. Sour cherry and cardboard aromas. Sweet dark caramel and alcohol-soaked cherry upfront turning mild pith in the lasting bitter finish.

Ruby beer with a creamy, off-white head - kind of an earthy aroma for a bock - a lot of sweet date, raisin, treacle, dough - a moderate acidic tang - smooth, creamy mouthfeel - not as sweet as the aroma suggests, but still loaded with raisin, fig, caramel, toffee - some noble hops and moderate acidity do a decent job of cutting it, but it borders on cloying after a while, especially as it warms - I like my bocks sweet, though, so I don’t have an issue - quite complex.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thin tan head and a ruby tint when held up to a light. Aroma of cherries, roasted malt, chocolate (milk), raisins and a bunch of grapes. Medium to Full-bodied; Deep strong metallic and raisiny tastes up front with a lot of malt and alcohol following soon afterwards with a lot of bittering tastes and some off/metallic twangs later on. Aftertaste not too palateable - a bit harsh and bitter. Overall, a decent beer - worth a try if you can find it, but not great for the style or for milder tastes in general. I sampled this 50 cL bottle purchased from Liquor Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 14-March-2010, sampled at home in Washington on 25-March-2010.
