Hofstetten’s Granitbier (granite beer) has been a household name in the region for years. When we decided we wanted to continue building on the “Granite” theme in 2008, the logical next step, of course, was to make it stronger! Hence, our GRANIT BOCKBIER.

The beauty was that we already had everything we needed in our brewhouse from 1929.
Primary fermentation takes place in 120-year-old granite vats, thus connecting this beer to its Stone Age roots.

The Granitbock’s unmistakable flavor comes from granite stones that are heated over an open fire until red hot and then thrown into the beer, caramelizing the sugar in the wort. Once it cools, our classically cultured yeast is then added to the vats.

Though the process is quite laborious, the resulting beer is laden with caramel and roasted malt aromas unlike those in any other bock. We then lager the beer for another 6 months in our vaulted lager keller and fill it into bottles without any further processing.

We leave it unfiltered to ensure none of the wonderful flavors developed during the brewing process are lost. For the beer lover with a cool dark place in their homes, this beer can easily be aged for another 3 years.

On tap. Pours an almost opaque deep brown with a smallish off-white head. Roasty nose with some pumpernickel. Solid body, again pumpernickel and roast, but also a little dried dark fruits and even less burned caramel. Ends on a roasty bitter finish, and clearly it’s a Bock on the less sweet side. 170212

Bottle, 75cl. Vintage 2010. A rather flat one, but with some light beige bubbles round the rim. It’s almost clear, dark amber in color. The aroma has dried fruits, caramel malts and a little touch of meatyness. All feeling quite aged. The flavor feels fresher, although with the same meatyness, caramel and dried fruits. Not much hoppyness going on. Full-bodied, smooth and with a little hint of warmth. A quite nice one, but I bet it would be better fresher. 120218
