Hofstetten’s Granitbier (granite beer) has been a household name in the region for years. When we decided we wanted to continue building on the “Granite” theme in 2008, the logical next step, of course, was to make it stronger! Hence, our GRANIT BOCKBIER.

The beauty was that we already had everything we needed in our brewhouse from 1929.
Primary fermentation takes place in 120-year-old granite vats, thus connecting this beer to its Stone Age roots.

The Granitbock’s unmistakable flavor comes from granite stones that are heated over an open fire until red hot and then thrown into the beer, caramelizing the sugar in the wort. Once it cools, our classically cultured yeast is then added to the vats.

Though the process is quite laborious, the resulting beer is laden with caramel and roasted malt aromas unlike those in any other bock. We then lager the beer for another 6 months in our vaulted lager keller and fill it into bottles without any further processing.

We leave it unfiltered to ensure none of the wonderful flavors developed during the brewing process are lost. For the beer lover with a cool dark place in their homes, this beer can easily be aged for another 3 years.

Pour George, NY 50cl ($10): Pours a mahogany colour with a thick looking off-white head. Aroma is dark fruit, toffee, and caramel malts. Taste is somewhat sweet, but not cloying. Body is medium to heavy and gives it a pretty substantial mouthfeel. It doesn’t have excessive amounts of complexity. Hops are barely there. Still, it is pretty nice.

(Bottle, Monk’s Café Wallingatan, Stockholm) Reddish brown colour with lasting, frothy, beige head. Malty nose with notes of dark bread, caramel and roasted nuts. Malty taste with chocolate, dark bread, caramel, nuts and a mild bitterness. More than medium bitterness, with a certain sweetness. Well balanced and tasty. Nice one.

Bottled@Monks Café Sveavägen, Stockholm. Very dark reddish brown colour, close to black. Mediumsized thick creamy beigeish brown head, that leaves some slight lace. Aroma is sweet ripe fruits, raisins, some sweet malts, and sap along with some toffeeish ntoes. Flavour is rather similar with burnt sugary and fruit juice concentrate like sweetness. A bit too sweet for me.

Swingtop bottle from Central City Liquor Store, Surrey; year 2011
Very nice bottle with a metallic medal, although this makes it expensive. It pours a beautiful dark amber color with red shades, and a creamy persistent head; it’s already tempting.
The aroma is mild, with a delicate nuttyness that is original and impressive, just mildly roasted cashews and pecans.
Good body strength; the mouthfeel is lean, and smooth; excellent caramel flavor, with very good roasted nuts compounding; the final tends to show a drier feeling, and also a biscuity quid; the bitterness level is correct.
Perfect balance, and elegance. Wonderful Bock.

16.9 oz. Bottle from Julio’s. Side –by- side comparison with the “Ice” Granitbock. Deep crimson color with thick fluffy, off white head from an aggressive poor. Malt is the main player here. Malt and toffee nose. Taste starts rich and malty, then dark fruit (mostly raisin). The finish is not sweet at all. A nice grain quality which I enjoy. No date on the bottle, so no way to tell how old it is. A slight port wine quality in the finish. Medium-heavy body. Soft Co2. This goes down easy. Smooth drinker, for sure more of a winter beer. Could weigh you down in warm months. Overall nice and would buy again.
