Working again with our friends at Sony Legacy (yup, the same folks we did our Miles Davis-inspired Bitches Brew with), Dogfish Head paid tribute to this blues legend by gettin' the hellhounds off his trail and into this finely-crafted ale.
Hellhound is a super-hoppy ale that hits 100 IBUs in the brewhouse and 10% ABV. It's dry-hopped with 100% Centennial hops at a rate of 100 kilos per 100 barrel brew-length. Can you tell we're stoked for this mighty musical centennial?
To accentuate and magnify the citrusy notes of the Centennial hops (and as a shoutout to Robert Johnson's mentor Blind Lemon Jefferson), we add dried lemon peel and flesh to the whirlpool.

Bottle @ ZZT 2016-1. Aroma of bitter hop, pine and malt. Taste has caramelised malt, pine, soap and ripe fruit. Solid, but a bit too old.

Thank you BDomua! 650 ml. bottle sampled @ ZZT 2016-1. 2011 Vintage! Dark hazy orange, little white head. Nose is old lemon, zest, herbal, green grass. Taste is milky yeast, low sweetness, lemon, zest, still quite big on lemon, still rather bitter, herbal bitterness. Sugar & yeast are showing. You get some vintage notes. Still pretty decent for a 5 year old IPA. Held up better than expected, must have been stellar fresh.

Sampled from bottle @ ZZT 2016-1. Hazy orange color, medium sized off-white head that lasts for quite a long time. Lovely aroma of hops, malts, sweetish hops. Taste malts, hops, lightly resinous. Lovely stuff.

750 mL bottle dated 09/30/2013, bought on clearance. Fully hazed caramel pour with an off-white head. Lemon and oxidized grassy hop aroma. Lemony grassy flavor, spicy hops, and an earthy oxidized hop character that’s not really bad. Holds up surprisingly well for a hoppy beer of this age. I actually like it this way.
