2011 would have marked the 100th birthday of Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Johnson, who according to legend, sold his soul down at the crossroads in a midnight bargain and changed music forever.

Working again with our friends at Sony Legacy (yup, the same folks we did our Miles Davis-inspired Bitches Brew with), Dogfish Head paid tribute to this blues legend by gettin' the hellhounds off his trail and into this finely-crafted ale.

Hellhound is a super-hoppy ale that hits 100 IBUs in the brewhouse and 10% ABV. It's dry-hopped with 100% Centennial hops at a rate of 100 kilos per 100 barrel brew-length. Can you tell we're stoked for this mighty musical centennial?

To accentuate and magnify the citrusy notes of the Centennial hops (and as a shoutout to Robert Johnson's mentor Blind Lemon Jefferson), we add dried lemon peel and flesh to the whirlpool.

Hops and citrus, definitely lemon, mostly citrus hops, completely masking the malts. Slick body, small tight head, slightly sticky. But still damn good....

bottle. One of the best I’ve had in a while - tremendous taste and finish. Outstanding!

Cloudy pale tan, light bubbly head. Aroma, touch of lemon and slightly gluey pale malts, hint of biscuits. Fairly thick and chewy, touch of peach and lemon. Clunky but sweet.

Bottle from Jamestown S’Klallam Longhouse Market & Deli, Sequim
Hazy copper color with small head. Very nice aroma, peppery and lemony, and nice grainy malts; very light vanilla. Lean mouthfeel, soft, with some alcohol perceived immediately; grainy malt flavor, light colored caramel and hints of toffee; quite strong bitterness, soft hop resins, a light fruity touch from the hops and some citrus fruit peel. Balanced and powerful, not too heavy to drink.
Very nice beer.

On tap at Gourmet Haus. Fresh meadow, lemon grass and chaffed wheat. Hazy orange with full white head. Taste is herbal, fresh and lemon zest. Moderate spice finish and not overly bitter.

Bottle bought at City Beer in February 2014. A bit hazy golden/orange with a white head. Rather sweet with lemon, some pineapple, hay and malt. Also some light "spices". Relaxed and easy to drink.

At a tasting, thanks tlahav, small bubbly head, hazy deepish orange colour, aroma of orange marmalade and grain, alcoholic flavour with sweet maltiness and a touch of tobbaco and a heavy coarse herbal grapefruit bitterness. Way too old.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel Florentin. Thanks Tom L. Slightly hazy amber. Aroma of malt and stale hops, a bit piney, and a bit of fruitiness. Sweetish malty flavor with citric notes and a bitter finish with alcohol and hops, kinda stale. Medium-bodied. Too alcoholic and probably not so fresh.
