2011 would have marked the 100th birthday of Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Johnson, who according to legend, sold his soul down at the crossroads in a midnight bargain and changed music forever.
Working again with our friends at Sony Legacy (yup, the same folks we did our Miles Davis-inspired Bitches Brew with), Dogfish Head paid tribute to this blues legend by gettin' the hellhounds off his trail and into this finely-crafted ale.
Hellhound is a super-hoppy ale that hits 100 IBUs in the brewhouse and 10% ABV. It's dry-hopped with 100% Centennial hops at a rate of 100 kilos per 100 barrel brew-length. Can you tell we're stoked for this mighty musical centennial?
To accentuate and magnify the citrusy notes of the Centennial hops (and as a shoutout to Robert Johnson's mentor Blind Lemon Jefferson), we add dried lemon peel and flesh to the whirlpool.

Bottle....copper on the pour with a beige head....citrusy hops on the sniff....holy lemon!.....a burst followed by a quick hop bitter....well crafted (wouldn’t expect anything less from DFH)...but its just a lot of lemon, even down to the bitterness of the seeds....not my favorite, could see this pairing well with a lemon pepper chicken, or some other lemon based protein dish

Hazy dark orange color, good creamy off-white head. Pineapple sweet fruity hoppyness in the nose, also pine needles. Medium-bodied. Sweetish fruity malt base covering the most of alcohol and IBUS. Piney finish. Sweetness kills action here.

750 ml bottle into signature tulip glass, bottled in 2012A. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy orange amber color with a dense 1-2 finger cream colored head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big grapefruit, orange peel, lemon peel, tangerine, orange rind, floral, grass, light pine, caramel, bread, toast, and floral earthiness. Very nice aromas with good complexity and balance of citrus hops and malt notes; with good strength. Taste of grapefruit, orange peel, lemon peel, tangerine, floral, grass, light pine, light caramel, bread, and floral earthiness. Good amount of earthy floral/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, orange peel, lemon peel, tangerine, floral, grass, light pine, light caramel, bread, and floral earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity and balance of citrus hop and malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a moderately slick, and fairly sticky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice DIPA, even at over a year old. Very nice complexity and balance of centennial hop, lemon peel, and malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Growler from Canal’s in Lawrenceville, NJ. Lightly hazed copper hued liquid topped by a big fluffy long lasting white head. Aroma is fruity toasted malt with hints of buttery caramel and citrus hops. Sweet grapefruit hops and caramel malt balance nicely. After about 15 seconds you realize that this is an East Coast Hop Bomb. The spicy Centennial hops take you by the balls and swing you around like the Tea Cups at Six Flags Great Adventure on steroids. It’s all here; the malt, the hops the attitude and the devil. God bless you Dogfish Head, you’ve done it again!

Very hazy amber beer, tidy white head. Silky palate with prickly carbonation. Rich hops - coming over as Sorachi like but that might be all the lemon here! A littler creamy malt and a dash of aniseed. Finishes with more creamy malt and a little bitter lemon. Nicely joined up and quite refreshing.

The Trestle Inn, Philadelphia tap: Pours orange with relatively little head. Aroma is grapefruit, lemon, sugar, and some amount of malts. Taste is bitter, but not insanely so. Citrus hops are pretty much everywhere. This is very easy to drink for a DIPA. A bit oily. Sweetness is present, but restrained. Pretty dope.

Shared bomber in tulip glasses. Shiny brown/gold; large, tight head. Big, hoppy aroma. A lot going on on the palate. Fresh, hoppiness; well-done use of the the lemon . . . definitely there, but not tart or sour.

On tap at Local Republic. Dark caramel color with a small, off-white head. Strong caramel and resin, with some peaty and toffee notes. Sugary sweetness up front, with some hop bitterness in the finish. Medium body, silky, and smooth. Overall, this is a very malty IPA, but tasty.
