2011 would have marked the 100th birthday of Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Johnson, who according to legend, sold his soul down at the crossroads in a midnight bargain and changed music forever.
Working again with our friends at Sony Legacy (yup, the same folks we did our Miles Davis-inspired Bitches Brew with), Dogfish Head paid tribute to this blues legend by gettin' the hellhounds off his trail and into this finely-crafted ale.
Hellhound is a super-hoppy ale that hits 100 IBUs in the brewhouse and 10% ABV. It's dry-hopped with 100% Centennial hops at a rate of 100 kilos per 100 barrel brew-length. Can you tell we're stoked for this mighty musical centennial?
To accentuate and magnify the citrusy notes of the Centennial hops (and as a shoutout to Robert Johnson's mentor Blind Lemon Jefferson), we add dried lemon peel and flesh to the whirlpool.

From a 22 oz bottle shared with friends. Pours a clear gold with an immense thick head. Fruity hop aroma. Hints of grapefruit. Bitter finish.

Pours a medium copper color with a good sized white head that shows great retention and lace. Smells of earth and spice with lots of citrus, green onion, and grapefruit. Light bits of sweet bready malt barely provide any contrast to the hop aromas. The flavor on the other hand holds lots of bready and caramel sweetness along with a hit of ethanol and a solid hop bite. Lemony grapefruit pine and garlic flavors provide an interesting contrast to the sweet malts. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet resinous mouthfeel. I really liked this beer, its a bit on the sweet side, but its quite interesting. The lemon is there, but subtle and with the citrus hops it melds quite well.

Smells boozy and hoppy. Pours amber with some lacing. Aroma is a little too boozy. Almost tastes like vodka. Medium carbonation. Some boozy bitterness but almost no hops bitterness. A little malty as well. Average. On tap at coles.

Draught at The Old Toad Dogfish Head Fest 5. Light copper with no head. Fruity nose, not very fragrant, with white grape. Big grainy malt flavor, with cereals and a bit of caramel. Strange and interesting.

Bottle. Golden colour with an off-white head. Aroma is hop, pine, citrus. Flavour is hop, fruit, malt, citrus, peaches, pine. Full body. Nice hoppy beer..

Nice copper coloured glow with a thinnish off-white head. Aroma of strong hops, malt, metal and a decent amount of lemons - quite potent. Medium-bodied; Strong hoppy flavour at first with a good malt backbone, but the pine and slightly earthy hops come through with a good bitter finish. Aftertaste shows more of the lemon and citrus notes with a good dose of hops on the finish. Overall, a nice imperial ipa that doesn’t show as much hops as most in the style, but enough character and complexity to make it a good beer. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from K&E Discount Beverage in New Paltz, New York on 26-November-2011 for US$12.99 sampled at home in Washington (rating it in South Africa).

On tap at Lupulin Reunion 2012 at RFD. Pours a transparent gold with some frothy, white head. Nose is minty, hoppy, pine, tea. Flavor is mint, orange, soapy, bitter. Lots of soap. Medium bodied, tannic finish. Weird.

Picked up at Julio’s a few months ago. I like the label. Very Tim Burton like. Compared this side-by-side with Firestone Double Jack. Used a snifter. Aroma is citrus hops, with fresh lemon. And a strange undefined order I can’t really place if it’s grain or burnt malt?? I was hoping the lemons would add something to this DIPA, kind of didn’t. Pine and lemon notes with the booze being significant. Not sure how anyone says this is balanced. Entirely too bitter and with the ABV so profound, I felt like I spent too much money on this bottle. I been sampling many DIPA as of late, but for me…. It’s just not my thing. Firestone Walker is a better buy for this style.
