2011 would have marked the 100th birthday of Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Johnson, who according to legend, sold his soul down at the crossroads in a midnight bargain and changed music forever.
Working again with our friends at Sony Legacy (yup, the same folks we did our Miles Davis-inspired Bitches Brew with), Dogfish Head paid tribute to this blues legend by gettin' the hellhounds off his trail and into this finely-crafted ale.
Hellhound is a super-hoppy ale that hits 100 IBUs in the brewhouse and 10% ABV. It's dry-hopped with 100% Centennial hops at a rate of 100 kilos per 100 barrel brew-length. Can you tell we're stoked for this mighty musical centennial?
To accentuate and magnify the citrusy notes of the Centennial hops (and as a shoutout to Robert Johnson's mentor Blind Lemon Jefferson), we add dried lemon peel and flesh to the whirlpool.

Bottle thanks to pellegjr. Pours a hazy orange/dirty blonde color with a thin beige head. Maltier in the aroma than expected, caramel, floral albeit grassey, and light hints of lemon. An interesting ’twinge’ at first sip... sort of a spicey citrus dandelion thing along with seemingly aged caramel malts. Then the burn of the abv hits and its like an aged barleywine followed up with a shot of turpentine. I wonder, is it from the dry hops or the lemon? Maybe it ages poorly? After warming up a bit it gets a little more palatable, but it just never really got going here... sort of like taking a digger on the second hurdle.

Pours a slightly hazy orange with a good white head. Citrus hop aroma. Well balanced IIPA. I couldn’t pick up on anything special or unusual about this. The lemon is completely absorbed into the citrus hops.

Bottle 750ml. @ [ Fastelavn Smagning - Carnival Tasting - Ulfborg ].Clear light dark orange colour with a average to large, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, moderate to heavy hoppy, citrus, riped fruit, orange - citrus, moderate grapefruit. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20120218]

Pours a cloudy orangeish-copper with rather thin head. Floral, hoppy aroma. Flavor is hoppy and citrusy, with just a hint of the extra lemon added to the mix. There is a bit of a bitter, mineral-ish aftertaste that diminishes my overall enjoyment just a touch.

Bottle, 10.0%. Mild grapefruity hop aroma. Cloudy orange colour. Small white head. The flavour has a good grapefruity note. Quite alcoholic, but in a good balance with the malt.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of fonefan. Pours a hazy deep golden with an off-white head. Heavy, herbal hop aroma. Solid body, fruity, yeasty with these herbal hop accents. Crude, bitter finish. Not a favourite. 180212

Bottled. An unclear dark golden beer with a yellowish head. The aroma has notes of fruits, yeast, malt, and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of straw, alcohol, malt, yeast, and spices, leading to a dry alcoholic finish.

Bottle, 75cl. An unclear, but almost see-through golden-orange beer with a small, off-white head. The aroma is certainly on the hoppy side, with pine cones and resins. Some citrus peel. A touch of maltyness too. It’s bitter, both initially and in the end, with a malty sweet backdrop. Resins, pine cones and citrus peel in the flavor. Full-bodied, lightly warming and with a pleasant carbonation. Lasting finish. A beer I certainly could drink more of. 120218
