2011 would have marked the 100th birthday of Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Johnson, who according to legend, sold his soul down at the crossroads in a midnight bargain and changed music forever.
Working again with our friends at Sony Legacy (yup, the same folks we did our Miles Davis-inspired Bitches Brew with), Dogfish Head paid tribute to this blues legend by gettin' the hellhounds off his trail and into this finely-crafted ale.
Hellhound is a super-hoppy ale that hits 100 IBUs in the brewhouse and 10% ABV. It's dry-hopped with 100% Centennial hops at a rate of 100 kilos per 100 barrel brew-length. Can you tell we're stoked for this mighty musical centennial?
To accentuate and magnify the citrusy notes of the Centennial hops (and as a shoutout to Robert Johnson's mentor Blind Lemon Jefferson), we add dried lemon peel and flesh to the whirlpool.

Bottle: Poured a dark amber color ale with a medium size foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of citrus and hops with weird unrefined grainy notes that are not too pleasant. Taste is a weird mix with off-balance notes of citrus and bitter hops with unrefined notes of grain and the actual lemon notes don’t really bring any additional refinement to this beer. Body is quite full with medium carbonation and no apparent alcohol. This appears to be another one of Dogfish head experiment where they don’t know where to stop.

On draught at Brews Cafe. This beer pours a dark orange-yellow color with a medium foamy off-white head that recedes steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of hops, citrus and malt. Full-bodied with a citrusy hops character and notes of caramel malt, pine and a touch of booze. The finish is moderately bitter with a lingering resiny hops aftertaste. Solid IIPA all around.

"Had this at the Dogfish Head Alehouse in Fairfax VA. I asked that they pour it into a tulip. A - Nice 2 finger head. The beer itself was a deep bronze with hues of gold. Not too dark. S - Sweet smells. It smells a lot like 60 minute IPA (which I had right before it) but with a TON of extra hops. T - This is a super bitter beer. The label was 100 IBU but the bartender said their pour is around 80. Lots of burnt taste but I can’t really decide of it’s a DIPA or IIPA (despite the label saying IIPA) M - Heavy carbonation, heavy beer O - I bought a bottle to take home but it doesn’t mean this beer blew me off my feet. The IBU gets in the way of what is otherwise a very delicious beer. Even IBU freaks would say it’s so burnt and bitter and hoppy that the actual herbal notes are taken over and thrown out of the way. Pour this at 45 Degrees F and let sit for a while while you cook a few bratwursts and sauerkraut. Then sip while eating those. It’ll be PERFECT."

OK, so I don’t like IPA, so sue me. Yes this beer is on style, so much so that it eventually makes this lager lover almost gag, but in a good beery way. Weird experience; the taste starts off mild, it starts off medium and then it morphs into a hop monster, slowly comming on until you don’t know what hit you. Way over the top and has a long bitter finish that leaves you begging for an impy stout chaser.

Really delicious IPA, like their 60 minute. The touch of lemon really makes the citrus stand out, but it really enhances the flavor instead of dominates it.

A hazed dark amber DIPA with a thin lacing white head. In aroma, sweet fruity caramel malt with resinous floral hops, light sulfur notes. In mouth, sweet caramel malt with dark fruits, resinous hops, light mineral notes, alcohol warmth, still decent for a 2011 beer.

750ml uncorked bottle. Opened with a nice hiss. Unfiltered orange-brown-tan. massive, steady off-white head. Lemony hop aroma, somehow really smooths it out, quite clean. I,m not sure why I sat on this one for the better part of a year, I’m sure the hops would have shined more fresher. Rich and malty, not so bitter for the IBUs. Somewhat watery, the woody, approaching orange-vanilla flavors are nice, and the hops are big and ever-present...maybe a little one dimensional, it lacks something in the mouthfeel. Certainly very DFHeady, not far removed from the 90 or the Barleywine. The lemon is subdued, but present, and adds a nice touch. A really solid beer.
