2011 would have marked the 100th birthday of Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Johnson, who according to legend, sold his soul down at the crossroads in a midnight bargain and changed music forever.
Working again with our friends at Sony Legacy (yup, the same folks we did our Miles Davis-inspired Bitches Brew with), Dogfish Head paid tribute to this blues legend by gettin' the hellhounds off his trail and into this finely-crafted ale.
Hellhound is a super-hoppy ale that hits 100 IBUs in the brewhouse and 10% ABV. It's dry-hopped with 100% Centennial hops at a rate of 100 kilos per 100 barrel brew-length. Can you tell we're stoked for this mighty musical centennial?
To accentuate and magnify the citrusy notes of the Centennial hops (and as a shoutout to Robert Johnson's mentor Blind Lemon Jefferson), we add dried lemon peel and flesh to the whirlpool.

Bottle. Cloudy, fiery medium orange body, thick dissipating off-white head. Barleywine-like nose with sugared citrus rind, pine, toast, and brown sugar, heavy and prickly with sharp wispy citrus notes. Sharp body, hoppy and prickly with citrusy hops and pungent lemon. Dense and powerful with prickly alcohol notes in the finish. Quite nice.

750mL bottle, pours a hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma of citrus and resinous hops, some pine and some caramel malt - very subtle nose. Flavour is very lemony, with lots of bitter citrus hops that bitterly linger on and on. Almost no malt backing. Solid, though way unbalanced and not complex. 90 Minute slays this.

750 mL bottle shared by obguthr at Butters Slutfest 2.0, Richmond, VA, 4.23.11. Pours a clear amber color with a medium sized creamy white head. Good head retention and lacing. The aroma is citrus forward, lemon particularly, with faint floral hop notes and toffeeish malts. The taste is toffee, resiny and citrus hops and a tart citrus bite in the finish. Medium-full bodied. Nice beer, but if I didn’t know ahead of time this had lemons in it I would have just chalked it up to the hops.

soft citrus hopping, a touch of flowers, green grass, a little peachy with cookieish malts. Hop flavors are light and peppery up front, a little floral behind that, with a medium sweet bready malt, a little light on body, with a citrusy bitter finish. Hazy amber, full foamy head, nice lacing. Lingering peppery bitterness with hints of lemon juice.

Draft @ the brewpub. Pours a slightly hazy orange color with a small white head. Has a fruity hoppy bitter piney grapefruit aroma. Fruity hoppy bitter grapfruit flavor. Has a fruity malty hoppy bitter grapefruit finish.

Bottle @ Dan’s house. Red orange appearance with an off white head. Grapefruit, lemon citrusy hoppy nose. Moderate lemon peel, mild to moderate grapefruit hoppy, fairly pale malty flavor. Booze is hidden very well. Great citrusy IPA that would probably be excellent for a hot summer afternoon.

From a 750ml from Grape and Gourmet brought back on a plane from Virgina Beach to good old Carbondale, IL. Poured into a snifter. Color is a beautiful orange/amber. Has a huge amount of bright white head that is nice and frothy, takes forever to go down, and leaves excellent lacing. Aroma is nice floral and citrus hops with a slight smell of sweet lemonheads. Strongly bitter with a slightly sweet aftertaste. You can definitely taste the lemon in there. You can also definitly tell this this bad boy is 10% ABV. Not in a bad way like some of the higher alcohol beers I’ve had, but in a very good way. Medium bodied with a sticky oily texture. Soft carbonation and a long bitter finish. Overall, this is an absolutely awesome beer. This is everything I could ask for. I just wish I could get more. The only thing I could ask for was a bit more of a lemon taste. This is one I’ll totally be looking for again.

Bottle. Amber beer with a cream colored head. Grapefruit and tropical fruit aroma. Pine and grapefruit flavor with light caramel and light earth. Medium bodied. Good bitterness. Pine and grapefruit lingers with light earth. Alcohol noticeable.

thanks jtclockwork for sharing–750ml bottle-pours a tight off white head with trailing lace and gold color. Aroma is soft lemon zest, some pine, light malt. Taste is lemon bite, sweet lemonade syrup, medium malt mid palate, spice hops.

Capped 750 from Malt & Vine. Bottled January 2011. Pours an amber so light it’s almost gold. Head is 3 finger foamy off-white. Aroma is earthy/piney hop with mild cooked caramel. Near full bodied. Flavor is floral/citrus/earthy/perhaps resiny over detectable malt. This stuff has a lot of flavor. Going well with hot salsa. I take back every bad thought I ever had about assoholes going around the world to get sticks and stones to make odd ridiculous beers. Til the next odd ridiculous beer. This beer is fantastic.
