2011 would have marked the 100th birthday of Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Johnson, who according to legend, sold his soul down at the crossroads in a midnight bargain and changed music forever.
Working again with our friends at Sony Legacy (yup, the same folks we did our Miles Davis-inspired Bitches Brew with), Dogfish Head paid tribute to this blues legend by gettin' the hellhounds off his trail and into this finely-crafted ale.
Hellhound is a super-hoppy ale that hits 100 IBUs in the brewhouse and 10% ABV. It's dry-hopped with 100% Centennial hops at a rate of 100 kilos per 100 barrel brew-length. Can you tell we're stoked for this mighty musical centennial?
To accentuate and magnify the citrusy notes of the Centennial hops (and as a shoutout to Robert Johnson's mentor Blind Lemon Jefferson), we add dried lemon peel and flesh to the whirlpool.

Aroma: The nose has a decent amount of citrus, some orange and lemon, some earth and resin
Appearance: It pours a cloudy orange color with a lasting white head and little bit of lace
Flavor: The taste is fairly hoppy, not much sweetness, but lots of pine and citrus hop notes
Palate: Medium bodied, leaning full, with a slightly sticky mouthfeel, and a well hidden abv
Overall Impression: This one will serve as my 100th Double IPA rating! Quite a milestone, as I love me a Double IPA! Anyway, onto the beer, I found this one to be very solid. Maybe not the best IIPA that I've rated out of those 100, but rather tasty none-the-less. I'll start the second hundred soon, but the first 100 will be hard to top.

Bottle. Holy cow, I can smell this one from across the room! Pours murky golden, medium thick white head with a solid curtain of lacing. Aroma of pine, lemon rind and hay. Taste is bitter throughout, with lemon in the background, bitter finish. Pretty straightforward.

750 ml bottle into tulip. Pours hazy orange with a large off-white head with good retention that leaves some nice lacework. Aroma is honeysuckle floral, sticky buns. Taste is bittersweet, meaty, and alcoholic. Lemon is there but not in your face. Finish is long and bitter, carbonation is medium, mouthfeel is creamy. Different than your average DIPA, but that’s a good thing. Tasty.

750ml bottle. Poured a straw yellow color. Aroma was mostly lemon, with a touch of hops, malty backing. Flavor was, well, lemon, citrus, lemon and lemon. It was actually quite refreshing for being a 10% ABV brew.

Pours deep amber into a tulip. White head with excellent retention recedes to skim surface. Sweet caramel and lemon aromas. Thick and hot with caramel and bread front to back followed by a lasting hot lemon pith finish.

Delicious idea, fairly basic DIPA result. The lemons really have no purpose other than to provide a slight citric bent to the nose; they appear nowhere in the flavor. Rather, this beer tastes like a run-of-the-mill Imperial IPA, heavy, heavy malts providing a floormat of sweetness, piney, bitter hops doing the rest of the work. Maybe, just maybe, I find some lemon peeking through way into the aftertaste, but not enough to justify this beer’s hype. A beer invoking Robert Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson, and hellhounds deserves much more sturm und drang than this mediocre beer before me.

Bottle shared by me with Jcwattsrugger. Pours orange amber. White head. Nose/taste of lemon peel, caramel malt and some spice. Taste also has medicinal feel mid palate and a dry bitter finish.

Enjoyed on tap at the Bad Apple in Chicago, IL while waiting for my food order. Appearance a golden light amber with not much head, white ring around the glass. Aroma like a bomb of centennial hops, just really prominent in the mix with some grassy notes that are apparent due to the type of hops. Taste is rather bitter, but after reading the description maybe not too bitter. The citrus also comes out in the taste and probably offsets the bitterness to make it slightly smooth. Its a big beer but doesn’t taste like it, the 10% abv is somewhat masked. There’s also a hint of malt in the back end. Its very hoppy but not too hoppy, its a well rounded iipa and pretty good.

On tap at City Beer. Pours with a hazed golden body with a lasting but small white head with good lace. Aromas are hoppy, citrus aromas with notes of orange, some minerallity, and an odd lemon verbena note. A bit sweet, malty. Flavors are sweet, alcohol, medium bitter. Finishes dry, but the malt feels kind of sticky overall. Plenty of citrus, oranges, lemon. Very light bubbles, finishes dry.

Pours dark golden color with off white head. Aromas of citrus and caramel malts with some lemon peel and alcohol. Taste is very similar to the 90 minute with some lemon added and more booziness. Medium body with average carbonation and a syrupy mouhfeel. A decent brew but definately not worth the fifteen bucks I paid for it though. I’d take a four pack of 90 minute for less $ over this any day.
