MASSIVE! Barleywine is released every year. What makes this beer so distinctive, and gives it the great depth of flavor, is the 8 hour long boil technique. The kettle at Gigantic is heated by a burner, essentially a blow torch under the kettle. This high heat caramelizes the wort, and the long boil intensifies that caramelization. The recipe changes every year, using different malts and hops, but the technique remains the same.

Small glass, draught at Mikkeller Bar Viktoriagade. Murky dark reddish body. Dark fruity nose. Taste of ripe fruits, sweet berries, caramel, and oak. Heavy bittersweet ending, mostly integrated alcohol. Heavy to drink. Decent sipper though (Copenhagen 30.04.2015).

Rich deep brown coloured body with a faint tan head. Aroma of alcohol, caramel, nuts, earth, grain, pit fruits and a lot of alcohol. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong caramel and nutty notes with a lot of pit fruits and raisins throughout along with a big malt body, some alcohol and slightly bourbony notes with a lot of unfinished sugars. Aftertaste shows that malt, apples, grain and oak notes that show up, with a lot of alcohol and some how even more pitfruits than in the flavour. Overall, a nice fresh barley wine, but this would only get better and more smooth over time. Great to sample and definitely worth searching out for if you can get it! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Zupanβs (Burnside) in Portland, Oregon, yesterday on 02-May-2015 for US$12,49 sampled in my hotel room day later, here in Portland, on 03-May-2015.

Draught @ Mikkeller Bar. Aroma has sweey licorice and ripe fruits. Also some liquor. Flavour is sweet with ripe fruits, mild woody notes, sweet malt and liquor tones. Also raisins and molasses. Very sweet, very American. Feels quite like an ASA.

On tap at Mikkeller The Original. Hazy chestnut with a small off-white head. Malty aroma with dried fruit, especially raisin and cherry. Sweet malty flavour with plenty of caramel and brown sugar. Next to the bourbon version this is quite unimpressive (and also too sweet)

Bomber. Pours a mostly clear but very dark reddish hue with a small white head. Looks awesome. A big sweet nose, toffee, caramel, rum, sugars. The flavor is massive indeed: sugary sweet concoction, certainly reminds me of some of the bigger sweeter English BWs like Thomas Hardy or J.W. Lee. caramel, raisin, toffee, brown sugar. Sweet fruity hops. Drinkable for sure. In my view, it needs some time to chill. Would be nice to try a 3 year old version.
