Mocha Machine is a well-engineered endeavor in massive aromatics and rich flavors. Brewed with an array British and German malts, this burly brew is infused with masterfully roasted coffee from Portola Coffee Lab in Costa Mesa, CA. It is then aged on cacao nibs from Ecuador, adding an awesomely deep dimension of fudge.

On tap at the brewery. It pours a dark brown with a tan head. The aroma is toasted, chocolaty with striong coffee. Background sweetness. The flavor is coffee forward and silky on the palate with a nice chocolaty backbone and light roast in the finish. Pleasant sweetness throughout. Really enjoyable.

Bottle, thanks to WortCraft. Pours deep clear black, small brown head, some lacing. Aroma is heavy on the ashtray, coffee and chocolate, a bit earthy. Flavor is light sweet and light plus bitter, again roasty with plenty of chocolate covered ashtray and coffee grounds. Medium body.

Thansk, flopfacefred. The beer pours nice and black with a medium-sized, heavy beige head. Looks to have some heft to it. A bit of lacing. The aroma is big on coffee and chocolate. Nice roasty, fruity coffee flavors. Rich caramel malt underneath. Lots of fudgy chocolate with a creamy sweetness to it. The taste displays much of the same. Big mocha mix of creamy chocolatey sweetness and coffee. The coffee seems a touch acidic and maybe kinda strong in the taste. It crowds out the chocolate in the finish somewhat. Still, it’s a solid enough mix and works together pretty well. More of a dark chocolate flavor to the taste, though that might just be the coffee bitterness. A touch of booze but it’s nice and doesn’t hurt the beer. Smooth, creamy mouthfeel. If anything, it could be a bit weightier, though I think that’s more a function of the abv. It drink plenty big for 9.2% abv. Another excellent beer from Beachwood.

Draught @ the brewpub. Aroma has lots of mocha coffee and some licorice. Flavour has strong mocha tones, some licorice and very dark chocolate. Really nice, reminds me of Struise Mocha Bomb.

Draught @ Beachwood BBQ & Brewing, Long Beach, CA Pours pitch black with a smooth brown head. Aroma of roasty malts, coffee beans, cocoa nibs, vanilla, espresso and mocha. Taste is smooth, slightly roasty and heavy with coffee, cocoa and chocolate notes. Finish is smooth, malty and slightly roasty with loads of coffee. Quite smooth and balanced despite being a total coffee overdose.

On tap at the brewery. Aroma is moderately coffee forward with some nice chocolate and roast notes. Light alcohol notes. Pours dark brown, almost black with a medium sized, fairly thick, mocha head that slowly recedes to the edges. Flavor is slightly to moderately sweet with some nice chocolate and lighter roast notes. Moderate coffee character with hints of alcohol. Moderate bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, a nice beer with a good chocolate character that works well with the coffee notes.

Sample at GABF 10/04/2014, thanks to my BIL for assistance with note-taking. Dark brown color with a medium beige head that diminishes steadily. Patchy lacing. Roasted malt, chocolate and coffee in the nose. Medium to full body with a roasty coffee and malt character with dark chocolate in the background. The finish is sweet with a namesake mocha aftertaste. Solid beer all around.
