This special lager is brewed at the end of August, with more malt and extra hops. The hops from our own region (Erembodegem) give the beer a nice bitter aftertaste. During the maturing of more than 2 months, the beer has matured naturally and all aromas have developed. Thanks to the natural saturation, the beer has a very fine pearly carbonation like champagne and a nice, dense and stable foam head. The result is a unique, bottom fermented blond beer that distinguishes itself from the sweet dark Christmas beers.

Clear golden colour, good frothy white head, recedes slowly, good lacing. Aroma malty, corn, grass. Taste medium sweet and bitter, malty, hint of citrus, Soft sweetbitter finish, metallic and herbal notes, medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. Not what you expect from a xmas beer but a decent lager.

Very unusual Christmas beer since this is not a spiced Scotch but a ’pils’ (pale lager), but then, if you come to think of it, Stella Artois once began as a Christmas beer too - so this one too refers to a forgotten time when pale lager overwhelmed Belgian beer culture even in Christmas versions. I agree with Tim Webb that this is one of the better Belgian lagers, with a deep yellow golden colour and an honest malt profile; corn has been added for the colour, but does not disturb, a first for me in pale lagers.

--- Beer merged from original tick of Slaghmuylder’s Kerstbier on 18 May 2018 at 09:26 - Score: 4

330ml bottle. Clear pale golden colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Hoppy aroma with cautious hints of spice and herbs in the background. Taste is initially slightly watery and minimally strawy, has notes of hay, hints of cooked vegetables, later with a nice herbal note.
