Originally brewed to mark the Queen's Coronation in 1953, this prize winning golden barley wine proved so popular that it has been brewed ever since. It is comparable in strength to the beer produced by Tudor brewers during the reign of Elizabeth I. Regular drinkers simply asked for a 'Lizzie'.

Bottle. (8.1%, 2002 vintage.) Ruby, almost clear body, with beige, large bubbles on top. The aroma has something leading my thoughts to an oud bruin with cherries, as well as oak, alcohol and a little sour touch. Oak, roasted malt, some hops, and that same cherry-ish oud bruin thing from the aroma, in the flavor. Medium, astringent, dry mouthfeel. Sweet, and a bit sour finish. A lovely blend of flavors. Definately a beer to try again. (070914)

Ruby red color, small off-white head. Typical Harveys barley wine -nose: plums and other dark fruits, malts, molasses and light licorice. Sweet, syrapy, with dates and plums, almost like Thomas Hardy’s ale but with less alcohol. Complex, excellent barley wine. This one must be potential for ageing.

1996 bottle - Pours dark amber with no head and virtually no carbonation. It has an aroma of malt, dark fruit, and oak. The flavor is sweet malts and oak with a hint of bitterness in the finish. It’s pretty good, but thinner than I expected. I’m guessing it’s a little past its prime.

Bottled (2002, 8.1%). Clear ruby red colour, small beige head. Aroma is really big time madeira, raisins, plum, alcohol and some dark fruits. Flavour is the same along with wood and vanilla. Leaves a really nice and long aftertaste.

(Bottle 50 cl) Beautiful, clear, reddish brown with a dense, retentive, beige head. Vinous, lightly tart malt aroma. Full-bodied with sweetish, dark malts. Some notes of nuts and a somewhat rustic, fusty edge with a vague tartness. The hops are discreet yet still very much present. Charming in a somewhat old fashioned way. 240107

Bottle says 1999. Pours deep mahogany into a snifter. Tan head migrates and dissipates. Figgy. Slick and sweet yet quad-like. Smooth turns chalky sweet finish. Confused.
