Originally brewed to mark the Queen's Coronation in 1953, this prize winning golden barley wine proved so popular that it has been brewed ever since. It is comparable in strength to the beer produced by Tudor brewers during the reign of Elizabeth I. Regular drinkers simply asked for a 'Lizzie'.

27.5cl bottle from kiohskh, cph. dark amber colour, thick smpooth offwhite head. sour citrussy aroma, artificial citrus. flavor is caramel, sweetness, slight citrussy notes, syruppy flavor too. thick mouthfeel, round and sweet. almost syrupy. alc well hiden, flavors well mixed, but caramel and citrus alone just don’t make a great beer. where’s the hops? anyway, for a barley wine this is quite oaky, it’s delicate and balanced and still strong.

Bottle at the Royal Oak, London SE1 27/01/09 at 8.1% ABV. Sweet, red fruit and earthy hop aroma. Flavour was also sweet, with some spice and a decent dry finish. Very enjoyable.

275 ml bottle shared by Indra. 1998 Vintage. Pour is ruby golden brown, mostly clear. Only a thin off white head. Aroma of chemical cherry swewetness, some maltiness behind that. Actually a pretty clean nose for a 10 year old beer. Taste is the sweet malt, caramel and a bit more of the cherry. Raisins and currants. Palate is coating, medium. Nice and interesting, thanks for letting me try this one Eric

Bottle, BBE May 07, at Pikkulintu, Helsinki, on 2008-11-15. Dark reddish brown and hazy. Small white head. Raisin and malts in nose. Full bodied palate with little carbonation. Rasin, malts, bitterness, caramell, hint of roastedness and some syrup in taste. Quite bitter aftertaste with raisin flavours. Turns dry. Really good one.

0.275L bottle purchased from Beverage Castle in Tampa poured a nice clear amber with thin tan head. The aroma is a bit light while it’s still somewhat cold. But I get dark fruit notes like figs, dates and raisins. There’s also a pleasant caramel and soft muted cinnamon aroma hiding out behind the fruit. As I imbibe this fluid I notice how subtle the flavors are for a barleywine. This might be due to the below average level of carbonation. There are smooth blended figs, dates, prunes and aged raisins. Once the dark fruit flavors fad momentarily I taste a mild caramel note, a hint of cinnamon and some dark chocolate. There’s some sweet fruit nectar returning at the finish. The experience ends with a mild dark fruit after taste.
