Can form Lidl France. As Perlenbourg 7.9 Strong. Pours a clear, dark golden color, rich head. Malty sweet aroma with some honey, medium to full bodied, high carbonation, sweet taste, sweet finish.

Euro strong lager from a 50 cl can bought at some Lidl supermarket, for about 0.80 € - it is quite obvious what type of beer, stylistically and commercially, I have in front of me here. Medium thick, lightly lacing, snow white head breaking quickly, leaving a steady rim around the glass and a few small patches in the middle, over a cristal clear, pure golden blonde coloured beer with a few specks of ’dust’ here and there. Simple aroma of soggy chicken corn, damp kitchen cloth, dough, industrial apple juice, white sugar syrup, sourish grains, ’can iron’, freshly cut green grass somewhere, some vague cooked vegetable (pasteurization) even, very faint wodka but otherwise no discernible alcohol. Clean and neutral onset, some faint green apple hints but no ’true’ fruitiness, grainy sourishness and (stronger) sweetness, calmly carbonated, with a slick, smooth mouthfeel, feeling thinner than expected from a beer approaching 8% ABV, almost pale lager-like in general feel. The breakfast cereal-like sweetness is very straightforwardly continued in the middle, accompanied by a light metallic accent though even this remains quite restrained; gains some bitterness in the end, from a very vague echo of grassy hops indeed but mostly coming from the wodka-like alcohol, which does establish a light burn at the back, but not as overly so as in many of its congeners; a glueish effect lingers too, along with continuing straightforward cereal sweetness which becomes even very slightly bready in the very end - yet alcohol, unsurprisingly, gets the last word. I have come to genuinely fear beers of this style throughout the years but this one is, all things considered, a bit of a relief: the alcohol, though unmistakable and tiring in the end, still remains more or less at bay, the metallic character is not too intrusive and the whole thing feels as if you are drinking a standard pale lager which is only slightly above the classic 5% ABV - but certainly not 7.9% ABV. I had way worse in this dreary style from Poland, Russia, Scandinavia or even the Netherlands - northern and eastern Europe, simply put - than this one; I will even go so far as to say that the German ’Gründlichkeit’ and the fact that the Reinheitsgebot is respected, have saved this beer from becoming a cheaply alcoholic, corny mess as is so often the case in this generally cheerless beer style. If I would ever end up to be an alcoholic bum and I could not afford drinking anything more expensive than this - God forbid - this would be a better choice for me than e.g. the Atlas series, the super strong Bavarias or even those abominable Gordon lagers. In all: obviously not even the slightest sign of greatness here, but less bad than expected, so in comparison with all the other beers I had in this bleak lager style, this is clearly above average.

Light lager aroma. Pale gold, small head. Medium sweet, no noticeable bitterness. A bit astringent. Short finish.

Jul. ’15. A 0.5 l can (thanks Marko) that poured a clear golden body with a small head. Malty eggy and sugar syrupy aroma. Sweetish flavor, more of the same with some lemony notes, too. Alcohol was more than evident. Carbonation was lower, making it even more obvious. A boring brew, but a cheap option for getting drunk if you can bear with its ugliness.

Yuck. Contains "hop extracts", whatever that may be. Don't get why reinheitsgebot allows this, but not for example Kriek.

can. clear yellow, smooth white head. metallic and macro malty aroma. Flavor is malty, dry, slightly roasted, malty sweet, Not the worst strong lager, but not very pleasant either. The sweetness is only just barely under control.
