To commemorate the one year anniversary of East End Brewing, I’d like to express my Gratitude with this limited release, bottle conditioned Barleywine-Style Ale. Brewed in the American tradition, this beer is big enough to imporve with a few years of cellar aging and large enough to enjoy with a GOOD FRIEND.

2007 bottle in trade with MrBunn, shared with mowz and some neighbors. Pours with a lot of floaties. Guess I stirred up some of that bottle-conditioned yeast trying to cool it a bit beforehand. mowz says he got impressions of honey mustard. Well, it’s not the first beer I’ve had with mustard, but I just figured it was a little spicy character brought on by yeast. The hop taste seems to be brought in through alcohol vapors. Quite brusque hop taste, I suspect Northern brewer more than anything else. However, as the bottle warmed up, and as we got further into it, a nice fruity ale taste started to emerge. Lots of sticky malt on the lips and tongue. With plenty of yeast in suspension, yet that didn’t affect the taste too much. Just the appearance might put a few people off.

Bottle: Poured a medium amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of toffee and caramel malt with sweet malt base is enjoyable enough for style. Taste is also dominated by medium sweet toffee notes with some caramel malt and a sweet finish. Body was about average for style with good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. I must admit that while this beer was satisfying it was definitely below my expectation – no dry fruit or interesting ester.

Bottle at Pilsner Pete’s awhile back. Pours brown. Nose and taste of sweet caramel malts, vanilla extract, brown sugars, molasses and slight hint of coffee.

2009, Bluejay (I guess) bottle number 968/1500 thanks to thirdeye11. Pours with a small tan head and a hazed brown body. Aroma of alcohol, berries, toffee, oak and caramel. Taste is toffee, berry, syrupy. Not too many descriptors found on this one. Syrupy mouthfeel.

2009 bottle, pours light amber with a medium off white head. Aroma is hot, lots of alcohol and sweet bready malts. Flavor is big, lots of caramel malt, munich and alcohol.

Great packaging, with the green wax and the brown paper. Unfortunately, the beer is flat, and in some barley wines, that works. This is not one of them. Some oxidation. Aroma has brown sugar and malt, and it is a little sweet. High abv is well hidden. A well made beer, but something went wrong, maybe in bottling.

Bottle at 14th Richmond Ratebeer Gathering on 03/19/2011 courtesy of BrewEngineer. 2010 Bottle 791/1500. Clear dark amber body with a small frothy off-white head. Sweet yeast and caramel aroma. Sweet toasty and caramel malt with some yeasty notes. Medium body with moderate carbonation. 6/3/6/3/13 - 3.1 Bottle courtesy of Kinz on 09/12/2009. This seems to be the 2007 bottle. Somewhat hazy dark brown body with a medium off-white head. Big caramel and light Belgian spice aroma. Sweet caramel. spice, and light molasses and floral hop flavor. Medium full body with moderately low carbonation. 8/4/7/3/16 - 3.8

BA trade, bottle # 1184/1500, yellow wax. The wrapping itself is worth a rating. pours dark/cloudy ruby, thick off white head. Aroma has some amazing hoppy/citrus nose, with caramel malts and fruits. Flavor, dark/brown sugar, caramel malts, thin bitter hops. Got some tropical fruits elements adding for a sweet smooth palate coupled with medium carbonation and grainy finish mixed with caramel.

2007 bottle courtesy of Kinz. Thanks! Pours a hazy reddish brown color with a thin head. Big, huge toffee aroma with nougat, caramel and faint hops. Taste is toffee, raisins and bitter leafy hop notes. Full bodied. Just a spot on malty barleywine. Well done. 8/3/8/4/16
2010 vintage on 3/19/11. 750 mL bottle. Pours a hazy orange-copper with a thin head that fades fairly quicky. Aroma of toffee, raisins, citrus, stone fruits. The taste is toffee, citrus, raisins, bitter leafy hops. Fairly boozy. Medium-full bodied, low carbonation. 8/3/7/4/15

Bottle #1184 (2006) pours out a redish amber topped with a off white head. Aroma of pit fruit and sweetness. Tast much more of the sweetness a nice caramel and hop tast. Thanks Toby
