Preserved Lemons + Salt = Refreshing Gose
We have been preserving lemons in salt and lemon juice throughout the winter, ready to brew this refreshing, zesty summer special.
Gose, is a traditional German-style sour wheat beer, usually brewed with coriander and salt. Once nearly extinct, this very refreshing style is making a comeback and we thought it would provide the perfect backbone to this wonderfully complex summer beer.
A fabulous citrus accompaniement to fish dishes, or it could act as a sour lemon pickle to Moroccan food.

Bottle, 330 ml from Mother Kelly’s Tap Room (E2). Hazy golden, white head. Strong citrus, lemon, zesty, some salt, spices, low carbonation. Medium bodied.

0.33 l bottle brought by Višnja 666 and Goran the Pilot. Hazy pale golden, minimal head. Funky, citrus, light herbs. Very lemony. Light sour. Lemonade. Candy. Watery, very nice finish, tart and puckering.

Straw colour, hazy, head completely dissipates
Aroma - sour acidic, lemon
Taste of sour lemon, soft brine, water, that’s it
Palate - No carb, thin body, sour lemon, salt. Finish has a briny linger which is not good
Overall - Water + lemon juice + soft brine = pointless ’beer’. Few sips then thrown out. Hipster nonsense.

Drink-in bottle from Thirsty, Cambridge. Yellow, clear, thin. Very little visible carbonation. Lemons, seawater, sweat in the aroma. Taste is nicely tart. Short finish - I mean very short - with a salty aftertaste. A noncommittal beer. It’s a style I’m fond of but... not all that great, this one.
