Barrel Aged Double Flanders Red Ale [Sour Ale].
Translation: Three Black Peters Black Blood. This is a reference to the blending team of Ron Gansberg and Curtis Bain, brewers at Cascade brewing and Preston Weesner, beer steward for the fest. The Three Black Peters take their name from Netherlands folklore. "Black Pete" was St. Nicholas’ helper and would scold the children who had been naughty and give a present to the ones that had been nice. Made exclusively for the festival, "Sang Noir" is a NW take on a traditional Flanders-style Sour Red Ale. Bigger than a traditional Red this Double Red is a blend of several barrel aged beers. Portions of the beer were aged in Pinot Noir and Whiskey barrels. Fresh Bing Blood Cherries were added to a portion and refermented in the barrel for three months before being added to the blend, giving it a big full bodied tart cherry red flavor with distinct barrel notes. This is a once in a lifetime beer from one of the most innovative breweries in the Northwest.

Pours a nice mahogany from a bottle. Red wine and balsamic vinegars, leather, wood aroma. Flavor has a nice cherry finish as well. Very well balanced, tart. Very good beer.

On tap at Beer Temple. Pours a clear but very dark red, almost black, red in light, with a slight head with great retention though. Aroma is a classic sour red, with cherry and distinct bourbon notes. Lovely. Full bodied and rich on the palate. Flavours are rich and complex, the basis is a beer of intense acidity but with nicely sweet notes. The cherries come out very nicely in flavour, as does the bourbon, which adds a lot to this beer. Finish is sweet and bourbony with quite some vanilla. Amazing sour!

750ml bottle. Slightly cloudy, brown-ish crimson colour with small, frothy, fading, beige head. Bourbon aroma, hints of vanilla, underlying fruity notes of morello and red berries. Taste is agressively sour, lactic, notes of vinegar, hints of morello. Nothing I need a second time, least of all considering the brewery's overprize politics.

750ml corked bottle. 2015 vintage. (9.9% ABV) Pours an unclear dark ruby with lots of sediment floating around and a small, fizzy, short lived, tan head that fully dissipates. Tart aroma of cherry, red wine, balsamic vinegar, oak and a hint of bourbon. Sweet flavour of cherry, red grape, red wine, balsamic vinegar and oak with a dry, sour, acidic, alcohol finish. Medium body with an oily texture and average carbonation. A decent sour red, plenty of pucker power. The bourbon was a little too subtle IMO.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass; 2015 vintage bottling, 9.9%. Pours fairly crystal clear dark ruby red/light brown color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of huge sweet/sour/tangy cherries, raisin, plum, raspberry, blackberry, currant, red grape, lemon, lime, green apple, almond, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, brown sugar, caramel, and bread; with light notes of leathery funk, red wine vinegar, pepper, and yeast/oak earthiness. Incredible aromas with amazing balance and complexity of fruity/acidic yeast, cherries, wine/bourbon barrels, and dark/bready malt notes; with big strength. Taste of huge sweet/sour/tangy cherries, raisin, plum, raspberry, blackberry, currant, red grape, lemon, lime, green apple, almond, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, brown sugar, caramel, and bread; with light notes of leathery funk, red wine vinegar, pepper, and yeast/oak earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tart/sourness; light yeast/oak spiciness and fruit tang on the finish. Lingering notes of sweet/sour cherries, raisin, plum, raspberry, blackberry, currant, red grape, lemon, lime, green apple, almond, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, brown sugar, caramel, bread, light funk/vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, cherries, wine/bourbon barrels, and dark/bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt/tart/sourness balance, and minimal puckering flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from tart/sourness and yeast/oak spiciness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/silky/acidic, and lightly tangy/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is amazing. Minimal warming alcohol for 9.9%. Overall this is an insane fruited Flanders red ale style! All around incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, cherries, wine/bourbon barrels, and dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to drink with the balanced lactic/tannic/drying finish. Perfectly balanced complexity from all flavors. A highly amazing offering, and world class fruited sour ale. One of the best I’ve ever had.
