Barrel Aged Double Flanders Red Ale [Sour Ale].
Translation: Three Black Peters Black Blood. This is a reference to the blending team of Ron Gansberg and Curtis Bain, brewers at Cascade brewing and Preston Weesner, beer steward for the fest. The Three Black Peters take their name from Netherlands folklore. "Black Pete" was St. Nicholas’ helper and would scold the children who had been naughty and give a present to the ones that had been nice. Made exclusively for the festival, "Sang Noir" is a NW take on a traditional Flanders-style Sour Red Ale. Bigger than a traditional Red this Double Red is a blend of several barrel aged beers. Portions of the beer were aged in Pinot Noir and Whiskey barrels. Fresh Bing Blood Cherries were added to a portion and refermented in the barrel for three months before being added to the blend, giving it a big full bodied tart cherry red flavor with distinct barrel notes. This is a once in a lifetime beer from one of the most innovative breweries in the Northwest.

Bottle shared at a tasting. Dark brown with a thin tan head. Notes of dark cherries, apple vinegar, nice oak notes, light vanilla, more cherries. Very acidic, medium tart and quite complex.

Bottle. Wood, fresh hay, tart cherry, and caramel malt aroma. Brown with small head. Moderately sweet cherry, caramel and moderately bitter/astringent hay/wood flavor. Nice body and balance. Very nice.

No head, brown-red clear beer. Fruity nose, dark fruit, plums, alcohol. Speculoos , dark fruit flavours, but sour, acidic, as seemingly all Cascade products. Acidthinning and -burn. Certainly not the worst Cascade, not the best either.

Süß säuerlicher Geruch. Dezente Säure, leicht fruchtig, milde helle Holzigkeit. Geringe Bitterkeit, spritzig, Zitrus. Langer Nachhall, weich, die Säure weicht dabei von allen Aromen als erstes. 10/13/12/12/12/13

From 75cl bottle at Grand Cru, Rimini, Italy. Pours dark red with creamy limited foam. Aroma is somehow acetic. Body is medium-dense. Taste is sour, maybe more ascetic though not extreme, and with some sweetness. Long finish.

Poured from a 750 ml, 2011 Project bottle. Aroma is malt and cherry. Some caramel, toffee, toasted bread and hints of chocolate with moderate cherry notes as well as some raisin, fig and light berry notes. Hints of the oak and the alcohol. Pours brown with some auburn hues and a medium small, moderately thick, dark tan head that recedes quickly to the edges where it lingers for some time. Light lacing and small legs. Flavor is moderately acidic with a bit of a sharpness to it that lingers into the finish. Moderate malt notes with caramel, toffee, toasted bread and hints of chocolate and roast. Moderately strong tart cherry notes with some berry, raisin, fig and prune. Some light alcohol notes in the finish with hints of oak. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low, but present alcohol warmth. Overall, about what I expect form a beer like this. A bit too acidic and sharp for my preferences. Lots of fruit and malt notes. Some light alcohol and oak notes.

Thanks Khalil for sharing the bottle! Poured into a taster showing unfiltered brown with white lacing. The nose shows light bourbon, oak, and lightly tart. The palate is medium bodied and lightly carbonated. Highly tart with flavors of bourbon but clashes severely with the red wine barrel and quite astringent.

Bottle from a colleague. Black beer lasting tan head. Sour dark fruit and liquorice aroma. Some malt. Some sourness. It’s a very drinkable well balanced sour beer. A touch of the balsamic vinegar. Yep a little sweetness from the ABV maybe. Some dark cherry flavour. It’s decent. Just a little one dimensional.
