Fruit barleywine with cherries and orange peel, older 50 cc bottle from De Caigny. Medium thick, ‘dirty pinkish’-tinged off-white head, quite moussy and stable around the edge but quickly reduced to flat islands in the middle, over an initially cristal clear, very deep and warm vermillion-hued copper red beer, hazy and a touch more brownish with sediment. Aroma initially reeks very strongly of concentrated gravy and beef stock, but this rather uninviting effect fades a bit after a while, unveiling notes of indeed sweet cherry juice, blackberry jam, cranberry sauce and elderberry syrup – a lot of sweet, sugary and only mildly acidic fruit, in other words, next to background impressions of melting blonde sugar, marmalade (rather than actual orange peel), tomato concentrate, damp leaves, stewed red cabbage, raspberry vinegar, red wine, caramel candy. Notably sweet main flavour, lots of sweet cherry but also cranberry and elderberry, even grenadine-like aspects in the onset, sugary and even sticky, but partially balanced by an underlying, passionfruit- and apple-like sourness; softish carbo, smooth and very resinous, even bit cloying mouthfeel, feeling thinner than expected from a 10% ABV barleywine. The slick caramelly malt core carries the sugary fruit sweetness onwards to a sweet, still rather cloying finish, wherein the initial acidic aspect also lingers a bit, yet insufficiently so to balance out the sweetness. Hop bitterness, if any, remains very low and hidden faraway in the background, alcohol is unsurprisingly more prominent and provides a liqueurish, warm afterglow. This is a very weird concoction, if you ask me: way too sweet even for an English style barleywine, feels more like a high ABV sweet fruit beer really, but with more depth, complexity and balancing sourness to it. The cherries provide flavours reminiscent of sweet ripe berries more than actual cherry and the orange peel is a bit lost in the whole. Probably the sample was a tad too old already, but in any case this is not really my kind of beer, the sticky sweetness and that beef stock aroma bothering me the whole time. Poorest Hornbeer for me personally so far.

From bottle. Pours dark brown, with limited foam. Aroma, when warmer, is rich: cherries under spirit, chocolate, caramel, resin, cookie, a little cough syrup, butterscotch, vanilla. Body is full, oily and a little sticky, with only some initial carbonation Sweetness dominates. Finish is long, with some more sweetness.
