Samael is the prince of demons, the angel of death, accuser and destroyer. Filled with enmity towards man, he planted the vine, the forbidden tree of paradise. Behold his venom and vengeance, both sweet and tempting, enticing you, his spellbound victim, within his wings.
Samael’s Ale is a super-caramelly, oak aged English-style strong ale. Perhaps the least hoppy (sacrilege here at Avery!!) beer we’ve brewed, to accentuate the malt. The oak is very apparent in this rich and high gravity ale, adding additional depth and complexity with a woody and cask-like nose and a pronounced vanilla flavor on the palate.
This potent ale is the second installment, along with The Beast, of our “Demons of Ale Series”.
Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, turbinado sugar, hops, yeast, and American oak chips.

Bottle: Clear, red-amber...no head, just a few stray tan wisps. Smoky, dark fruit, sugary aroma. Taste is sweet, clingy...sugary vanilla, wood....caramel malt. Raisins and port wine. Cough syrup. Massive flavours....boozy (of course)..sticky. Points for audacity.

355 ml bottle courtesy of Marsiblursi. Batch 2, 2006 vintage. Many thanks! Pours clear copper with no head worth mentioning. Smell is sweet, slightly oxidized and intense with caramel, toffee, alcohol, vanilla, leather, raisins in rum, prunes, figs, cookie dough, vanilla fudge, charred wood, orange zest, roasted coconut and hints of pine needles, roasted hazelnuts and resin. Taste is sweet, tiny bitter, very tiny fruity tart and malty with caramel, toffee, alcohol, wood, vanilla fudge, prunes, raisins, figs, brandy, coconut, english fruit cake, leather, roasted nuts and hints of pine needles and resin. Mouthfeel is sticky sweet, boozy, round and near full bodied. Finish is sweet, tiny bitter and tiny fruity tart with caramel, toffee, figs, raisins, prunes, cherries in brandy, cookie dough, charred wood, roasted nuts and pine needles. A huge beer that has matured nicely. Would be interesting to try a newer vintage for comparison.

Bottle. Hazy red copper liquid with minimal off-white head. Aroma of toast, caramel, toffee, wood, vanilla, booze, bread, dark fruit and grain. Taste is light to medium sweet and light bitter with notes of booze, grain, dark fruit, caramel, toffee and woody vanilla. Medium to full bodied with low carbonation. Quite nice but quite boozy because of the high ABV.

2006 vintage, cellar temp. produced 1 finger head but faded pretty fast. Burnt oak is the best way to descirbe the appearance. I can smell corn sugar and oak from 2 feet away. IT has this citrus nose along with the oak. Wow. Taste is pretty impressive. Cheap candy sweetness followed by vanilla and tangerine. Finish is all oak and holy crap, I just realize this is a 15% beer. How can that be? It has no booziness at all. Impressive.

Bottle shared at the Richmond Industry Gathering. Pours a hazy copper color with a thin creamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of toffee, raisin, soy, candied citrus, brown sugar, booze. The taste is toffee, raisins, bitter herbal hops. Full bodied and hot. Decent.

Batch 3. March 2007. Cloudy - muddy chocolate coloured beer. Sweet aged malt nose, quite ’wee heavy’ like. Soft palate, a little dry. Immediate very sweet malt, caramel. Sweet aniseed alcohol. Whisper of red fruit. Finishes a little spicy. A relatively simple taste profile but it tastes great!
