Anvil ESB is our interpretation of a traditional British-style pub ale. Deep amber in color, a toasty character from British malts and a touch of kettle caramelization blend seamlessly with a mild English hop profile. Its delicate balance of flavors will keep you coming back pint after pint, making it a complex creation we’re proud to call our flagship beer.

Bottle at Brewdog Bar Aberdeen. It pours deep ruby-red, with a thin foamy beige head. The nose is wood, leather, chocolate, Christmas pudding and light spice. The taste is wood, nut, chocolate, light roast, soft fruit (plum, fig, raisin, sweet raspberry) and light spice, with a long, dry finish. Medium body, fine carbonation and velvety mouth-feel. A well balanced and well put together ESB.

22 oz. bottle, split with Matts_Property, pours a clear dark red / amber with a small head. Nose is unusually strong for the style, with lots of slightly burnt caramel malt, wood, bittering hops, and some orange / lemon rind. Flavour features an array of fruity esters, woody / caramel malts and some spicy, zesty hops. As the style goes, this is wonderful - count on AleSmith to follow through.

Location: On tap at the Brewery, 1/8/10

Aroma: Malty, caramel, some smoke, floral hops, and some spice
Appearance: Copper color with a tan head
Flavor: Balanced, malts are dominant, but it is somewhat bitter considering the style
Palate: Medium body, creamy mouthfeel, smooth finish
Overall Impression: This was a pretty solid beer. Not a crazy brew by any means, but a nice example of the style. Look, I liked every single beer I had at AleSmith, and while this one wasn't nearly my favorite, it was no exception.

22 oz bottle purchased at Chris’ Liquors in San Diego, California. Pour is hazed burgundy with an off white 1 inch head. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, with floral orange citrus hoppiness. Grainy and assertive. Taste is toasty caramel malt, though less sweet than expected from the nose. The floral hops and orange citrus, with bitter pine hops lead to dry crisp finish. Palate is medium, grainy - real drinkable. Nice.
