Emphasizing that complexity of character can arise from simple elements, this ale is made with three malts and one hop. Its light amber color and slightly spicy malt character are derived from the use of German Dark Munich Malt and Rye Malt respectively. North American 2-row barley combines with the other grains to lay the foundation for the hop onslaught to come. Summit hops are used exclusively in the boil for bitterness, flavor and aroma but it doesn't end there. Post-fermentation dry hopping allows the 10% ABV monstrosity to gently coax the citrus rind and grapefruit aroma to join the 100 IBUs already present. This beer should greet you with a pungent citrus blast, provide a spicy yet round middle and finish with a brisk, clean bitterness.

Draft at Malt House. Intense passionfruit, grapefruit, tangerine aroma. Astringently tropical fruit. Hazy orange tan, lacy off white head. A great new school/post Hopslam IIPA, with that light amarillo orange hop flavor, not overly sticky and resinous. Floral, citrusy hops coat your mouth. Still remarkably mellow for it’s depth. A little harsh in terms of price, but an awesome beer.

Canned 1/19/2011 sampled 2/12/2011 Pours a deep golden color with a one finger bubbly white head that slowly recedes to lace in my glass. Resinous garlic, onion and pine hops dominate my nostrils with their spicy aromas. I look all over for some malt, but aside from a fleeting bread type aroma I can’t find any. If I close my eyes, take a big whiff, and think about tomatoes I’ve got spaghetti sauce in my glass. Taste is actually less hoppy than I would have thought from the nose. The malt is much more present with its bread and caramel, but it barely masks the pine resin, garlic and onion I get from the hops. Long lingering garlic resin after every sip leaves me longing for olive garden bread sticks. Full rather syrupy and resinous mouthfeel, Medium to thick body and light level of carbonation. I have mixed feelings about this one. I could not drink much of this, but I applaud the effort and the out of the box thinking. I think this beer is a great style expanding experiment, but I feel for my tastes this beer hits some notes that my palette may not be ready for.

Purchased at Breeze Thru in Milwaukee, WI; enjoyed with a good friend while watching the NHL all star game. Appearance cloudy golden with a rich white head. Aroma of lemon, hops, and a bit of alcohol. Taste somewhat crisp, lemony (which is odd to me for a dIPA). All in all this is a decent dIPA.

O.355l can @ Henriks, Bergen. Pours a orange a bit hazy body with a small white lacing head. Fruity nose, with some sweet alcohol and spices. Quite hoppy! Medium to full-bodied with low carbonation. Dark hoppy flavors, faint peachy and citrus zest. Not to good hidden alcohol profile, but a really lasting hoppy, dry and bitter finish.

Can. A dark golden beer with a lazing yellowish head. The aroma has strong notes of spices, malt, caramel, and hops. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of hops lending it notes of grass, combined with notes of malt and alcohol, the latter tickling the palate, when the dry and bitter finish sets in. Like drinking hop soup.

Can: Poured a hazy medium orangey color ale with a nice thick frothy head with good retention and very good lacing. Aroma of pine and citrus is quite intense. Taste is totally dominated by the hops with really heavy notes of pine and resin with some citrus undertones also coming through. Malt backbone is also noticeable thought taste is overwhelmed by hops profile. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no alcohol was showing. Very interesting though piney hops is maybe a bit too heavy.
