Irish red ales? Yes, we know. Sweet, a bit cloying and, well, no thanks. So, it was brave of us (we say bravely) to put the words “red ale” after our own moniker. Why the hell would we do that? Because this is a real red ale, an ale to conjure with that happens to be reddish in colour. More importantly, it’s exuberantly, joyfully fruity with a bit of malty caramel.

Bottle. Fiery orange-brown body, medium creamy clumping off-white head. Soapy, herbal bitter hops nose. Dry body, dominated by herbal, leafy, soapy hops with light toasty caramels. Bitter hoppy finish.

Nice deep ruby hue with a pleasant tan head. Aroma of lightly toasted malt, subtle nuts and some light caramel but fairly mild. Medium-bodied; Pungent roasty malt flavour with a touch of caramel, earth and a bit of light spices. Aftertaste shows some caramel sweetness, a bit of malt but mostly an assertive nutty, earthy red with some very mild hop notes. Overall, an okay beer - definitely worth trying compared to most Irish beers. I sampled this pint on draught at the Porterhouse Brewpub in Temple Bar (Central) Dublin, Republic of Ireland on 20-February-2009.

Bottle. Clear dark amber with small off-white head. Flavour is malt, caramel, fruit, hops, little sweet and bitter.

Bottle from Wine & Cheese in Clayton, MO (but I just saw it at Bottle Barn in Santa Rosa). Pours lightly ruddy amber with a transient off-white head. Aroma of roast malt with a touch of chocolate. Med body. Flavor definitely starts out with chocolate. There’s malt sweetness, but there seems to be fruity hop enough to balance. Finiances with a light chocolate aftertaste.

Bottle. Pours reddish amber. White head. Nose of grassy hops, lemongrass, spicy hops and pale malt. Taste is pale and wheat malts, hops and light pinewood.

New beers available at the local today, even at 5 bucks a bottle I still pulled the trigger. Pours a deep dark golden almost reddish in color with a good sized fuzzy white head that slowly recedes to form a cap and lots of sticky lace. Smells great! Dark crystal malt sweetness hints of dark fruits and burnt sugar. Very little to any hop present in the aroma. Taste is malty sweet with light caramel slightly bready with some dark fruit and an earthy hop bite that surfaces just long enough to keep it on the right side of cloying. Creamy smooth mouthfeel, moderate level of carbonation and a medium to light body. Very simple but quite tasty brew, very easy to drink sessionable ale. If not for the price tag I could easily see more of these in my future.

Amber,fast fading beige head.Toasty,carmel nose. Mild carmel malt profile,light roasty mid, light but long hop finish. Easy drinking, I like it!!

[330ml bottle that Jim shared with me - cheers!] Amber with a moderate creamy head and negligible carbonation. There’s some lemon & a little bitterness from the hops, along with a crackle of autumn leaves, but it’s rather overcome with the sickly caramel sweetness of the crystal malt. It’s like a Greene King brew where they’ve actually remembered to add some hops. Not great, in other words.

not so good. aroma is fairly bland, color is more brown than red, taste is like an american macro. the porterhouse continues to make sub par beers and is giving the wrong direction to other brewers in Ireland what their beers should be for success. glad to see something else besides guinness, smithwicks, and murphy’s, but this needs to be far better to gain any recognition for irish ales.

Bottled, from The Drink Store, Dublin. Clear amber, huge firm head. Roasty and fruity. Light bodied with clean, rounded mouthfeel, slight notes of peat and ripe fruits. Light spicy bitterness.
