Irish red ales? Yes, we know. Sweet, a bit cloying and, well, no thanks. So, it was brave of us (we say bravely) to put the words “red ale” after our own moniker. Why the hell would we do that? Because this is a real red ale, an ale to conjure with that happens to be reddish in colour. More importantly, it’s exuberantly, joyfully fruity with a bit of malty caramel.

11.2 ounce bottle from Bier 30. Pours a clear reddish color with a thick white head. A sweet nose of big toasted malts and caramel. A bit of a bitter and metallic bite in the flavor alongside caramel, light fruit and toast. Very nice. Loads of flavor for 4.4%.

Bottle shared by Velkyal. Thanks! Pours a clear auburn color with a large frothy head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of nutty notes, caramel and faint hops. The taste is raisin, toffee and a bitter hop finish. Medium bodied.

Pours dark orange with a medium foamy head. Aroma has notes of malts and slightly hops. Taste is slightly malty and watery with notes of hops and bitterness. Smooth, nice finish. A bit light bodied, but quite well balanced and refreshing.

Draught, 4.4%, KØ11. Almost clear amber colour. Small off-white head. The flavour is mildly malty with a rough bitterness. Rather distinct bitterness, but not extreme.

Keg at Porterhouse Covent Garden. It pours amber with a red hue and a thick foamy beige head. The nose is bread, yeast, hay and strawberry. The taste is hay, leather, wood, cardboard and toffee-apple, with a light bitter-hay finish. Too thin and bland.

Bottle 33 cl. Pours a clear warm amber with a rich off-white head leaving a neat curtain of lacework as it dissipates. Sweet malty nose with a whiff of grassy hops. Medium body, sweet and caramellish malts with a little roastiness and a subdued but existent hoppiness. A nice Amber Ale with filtration and carbonation adding to the drinking experience. 040611

Bottle. Fiery orange-brown body, medium creamy clumping off-white head. Soapy, herbal bitter hops nose. Dry body, dominated by herbal, leafy, soapy hops with light toasty caramels. Bitter hoppy finish.
