A Zesty Double India Pale Ale with Grapefruit Peel
We’ve made a hell of a lot of beers since 1996. Probably thousands at this point. Some stick around for decades, somefor a few years and some are brief visits, gracing us with their hoppy presence fora short time before becoming fond memories. Occasionally stars, planets and brewing schedules align and we bring back one of these ephemeral creations. In fallof 2014 we created a draft-only version of this delicious double India pale ale. Its bitter, zesty grapefruit peel infusion created a bright accent to flavors of pine resin and fresh citrus well in advance of the explosionof fruited beers we’re all reveling in atthe moment. We never stopped thinking about it, so a long five years later, we’re bringing back Stone Grapefruit Slam IPA for round two. It’s a link to the past planted delightfully in the present.

Split a bottle purchased at Trader Joes with jortiz82 and one of our mutual friends. Had high hopes for this one, knowing it was a Stone beer and whatnot. Poured a nice very slightly hazed golden yellow color with a medium sized white head. Aroma was pretty enjoyable - heavy on the tropical fruits, definitely notes of grapefruit juice. Citrus dominates. I’m a big fan (or at least was when I drank soda heavily) of Fresca, and so this was a bit like that in terms of the grapefruit. Unfortunately, it’s so heavily spiked with grapefruit, it’s incredibly bitter. Finish is all bitter, gross tasting grapefruit peel/rind. Not at all enjoyable aside from the wonderful aromas. All three of the people drinking this agreed. Incredibly disappointing.

22oz bomber pours with a crystal clear gold body that supports a nice looking firm light tan head of foam. The aroma offers up a quick whiff of black pepper and then it gets into lightly malt sweetened grapefruit and then some slivers of spicy dank hops mixed with floral hops. Ok, nice. The taste begins with a pleasing rush of hoppiness with grapefruit, a bit of mild spicy black pepper and then malt sweetened tangelo and tangerine citrus hoppiness. To midway a thin river of onion like spicy dankness and floral hops join in and help take this tasty cohesive mix of flavors into the finish. Lots of hop like flavor and bitterness creating a refreshing balance. Dig it.

22 oz bottle split at home. Pours light. Strong citrus aroma as expected. Taste is a lot lighter on the grapfruit then I was expecting, but its definitly there. Hoppy IPA with a very bitter finish. Not too bad.

Bottle. Pours clear orange amber with a large off-white head that dissipates fairly quickly leaving nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is light with pine and citrus notes, no grapefruit per se, but some dankness and forest floor aromas. Flavor is lightly sweet and medium bitter, some white grapefruit zestiness. Medium plus body, oily mouthfeel. Good, not great.

Bottle. Pours with a crystal clear golden hue with a moderately sized just off-white head. Aromas are of citrus, grass, grapefruit, light earthy-pine notes, hop resin, cohumulone, very mild crystal malt, floral, very light esters. Flavors are of pine, resin, grass, cohumulone. A bit rough/harsh bitterness, mild grapefruit. Relatively intense bitterness with a bitter balance. Dry finish, moderate toasted, ever-so-slightly sticky malt character. Bitter finish, moderately dry, medium carbonation.

Pours deep gold into a tulip. White head with medium retention recedes leaving spot lacing. Resin and grapefruit aromas. Dry with sweet caramel and tropical fruit upfront turning to resin before the lasting grapefruit speel finish.

Bottle (Stochasticity Project) poured into a tulip. Bottled 1/23/2014, 8.2% ABV. Pours a golden yellow color with almost a finger and a half of off-white head. Good lacing. Aromas of tropical fruit, lemon/lime and grapefruit citrus, grapefruit juice, citrus peel, floral. Tasting notes of big bitter grapefruit peel, grapefruit flesh and juice, lemon/lime, bitter hops. Medium body with a bitter and semi-dry finish.

Bomber listed as the Sotchasticity Project. Bought at Belmont. Pours a clear darkish copper color with a medium white head. A fruity nose, clear grapefruit, some caramel. Rich, very drinkable, robust oranges, grapefruit bitterness, light toffee and caramel. Very good. Like the base beer this has tons of flavor and is super smooth and drinkable. Lovely.
