A Zesty Double India Pale Ale with Grapefruit Peel

We’ve made a hell of a lot of beers since 1996. Probably thousands at this point. Some stick around for decades, somefor a few years and some are brief visits, gracing us with their hoppy presence fora short time before becoming fond memories. Occasionally stars, planets and brewing schedules align and we bring back one of these ephemeral creations. In fallof 2014 we created a draft-only version of this delicious double India pale ale. Its bitter, zesty grapefruit peel infusion created a bright accent to flavors of pine resin and fresh citrus well in advance of the explosionof fruited beers we’re all reveling in atthe moment. We never stopped thinking about it, so a long five years later, we’re bringing back Stone Grapefruit Slam IPA for round two. It’s a link to the past planted delightfully in the present.

On Tap at Brewforia, Meridian. In a tulip, clear orange golden witha full and lasting white head. Thick sheeting lacing as it receded. Classic bitter C hop aroma. Moderate bodied and lots of pithy resinous bitterness. Grapefruit I suppose but a lot of good west coast IPAs taste grapefruity. Lots of sharp IBU bite at the end. Feels hot, 8.2% is believable. Another good, obnoxious IPA from Stone.

Pours a clear light copper, with minimal head. Aroma is very citrusy, with hop pine. Flavor is bitter, bitter, fresh hops and citrus. The grapefruit really mixes well--doesn’t stand out like I thought it might. Excellent IPA.

22 ounce bottle. Honey gold color. Medium-sized creamy white had with a lingering clinging lace. Big citrus and pine hop nose has obvious grapefruit tendencies. Upfront, flavor is bittersweet toasted malt that morphs into a big juicy grapefruit hop rush. Lot’s of bitter complex citrus hops. Notes of black pepper and cardamom. Big and bold.

Grapefruit melds nicely with citrusy hops, malt still shines through. Pale golden with soft white head. Tart citrus in aroma and taste. Smooth despite the high abv.

Sampled on draft at 3R6P this beer poured a hazy orange-amber color with a large foamy off white head that left great lacing. The aroma was pine, grapefruit, cactus and was overall fairly faint. The flavor was tangy pine, cactus, grapefruit, a sour off undertone, tequila and pepper. Medium length tangy finish of cactus, grapefruit and continued off presence. Moderately full bodied. Disappointing.

Bomber from Whole Foods Charlottesville. Pours a clear copper color with a large creamy tan head. Average head retention, nice lacing. Aroma of sweet grapefruit, zest, floral and citrus hops. The taste is toffee malts, dry grapefruit, zest, candied citrus, resin and pine. Medium bodied, strong lingering bitterness. Solid. 300th DIPA rating! Cool!

Pale orange. Fluffy 3 finger head. Nose is awesome. Bursting with big grapefruit skins. Smells like galaxy and motueka hops. Taste. Um super raw. Just acidic, really like chewing on grapefruit skins. Like in the worst way. Ruination is there. Everything else detracts

22oz bottle picked up at Country Wine & Spirits.
Pours clear golden with a medium sized off-white head and good lacing. Aroma of grapefruit and pine. Flavors of grapefruit, sweet malts and pine resin
Very nice and tasty
The beer buyer told me this was brewed by Stone. My bottle looks like the one in the picture, but there is no mention of Stone on the bottle except the address where it was brewed and bottled. Is stone playing the macro beer game of naming beers something else so people will buy it? If so that is BS in my opinion.

Bottle. Strong pine/resin/grapefruit peel and tangerine malt aroma. Golden yellow with nice fluffy head. Sweet orange malt and moderately strong bitter pine and resin flavor. Superb balance. A great beer.
