A Zesty Double India Pale Ale with Grapefruit Peel
We’ve made a hell of a lot of beers since 1996. Probably thousands at this point. Some stick around for decades, somefor a few years and some are brief visits, gracing us with their hoppy presence fora short time before becoming fond memories. Occasionally stars, planets and brewing schedules align and we bring back one of these ephemeral creations. In fallof 2014 we created a draft-only version of this delicious double India pale ale. Its bitter, zesty grapefruit peel infusion created a bright accent to flavors of pine resin and fresh citrus well in advance of the explosionof fruited beers we’re all reveling in atthe moment. We never stopped thinking about it, so a long five years later, we’re bringing back Stone Grapefruit Slam IPA for round two. It’s a link to the past planted delightfully in the present.

Not as much grapefruit as you would necessarily think but a lot of grapefruit nonetheless. Some booze and a small sense of potpourri. Pours orange with good head and lacing. Medium bitter finish. Tap, bottom of barrel, at Churchkey.

Bottle from Andover Liquors, Crystal clear medium golden color with a good sized bubbly white head that slowly dissipates leaving spotty lace on the sides. Aromas of earthy spicy floral hops and a huge rush of citric pithy fruit. Malt, well yeah I assume this has some of that in there, but its hard to find. The flavor is very light bready malt flavor with a huge pithy citrus bitterness. Earthy spicy light green onion hop flavor round this one out. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a slick resinous bitter almost puckering mouthfeel. Nice IPA, but dare I say a hint too bitter for my tastes.

Bottle at Craig’s. Pours golden with a thin white head. Aroma is pine and grapefruit, masses of grapefruit. Taste is grapefruit and more grapefruit. Massively unbalanced, but nice anyways, if you like grapefruit.

bottle at home ... at the Lets do a Chris O tasting...golden amber ... soft fruits ... ... zezty grapefruit nose ... soft oily grapefuit ... soft tart fruits ... ,assive dry grapefuit ... that biutterness u expect from fresh grapefuit ... interesting

The appearance has a mostly clear golden amber almost crystal colored body with a one fingered white foamy head that leaves some light sticky lacing. There is no carbonation is seen rising.
The smell has pine and grapefruit combine very nicely through the hops and shows a resinous aspect.
The taste has a sticky sweet piney grapefruit. There is a grapefruit like aftertaste and super dry grapefruit rind-like bitter finish that could be construed as fairly bland, but that’s definitely the rind that’s coming through.
The palate is light to medium in body and comes across somewhat sessionable. Carbonation is good for the style as there’s a decent harsh aspect to it but isn’t anything overly done.
Overall, this is a very good DIPA that I would have again.

Aroma: The nose is lots of grapefruit rind, with lots of hops (citrus, pine, floral, etc.)
Appearance: It pours a clear orange color with a small white head and sticky lace
Flavor: Grapefruit comes through less than the nose, minimal sweetness, and a big hop bitterness
Palate: The body is medium-plus, with a soft carbonation, and a long, dry finish to it
Overall Impression: This is a pretty tasty beer. You really notice the grapefruit when the beer is opened up. That first whiff is all grapefruit, but once that fades, you get a pretty unbalanced (not in a bad way) IPA. This one is bitter and hoppy and good, but the rest of the beer just doesn't quite live up to the promise of the aroma.

On tap at Ale Arsenal. Resin, earth, pine and fresh grass dominate nose. Citrus is actually restrained compared to the dankness. Clear golden yellow with a full white head with moderate webbing down the sides. Taste is moderate citrus and oily resins. Lots of cloying malts. Citrus shows more at the back. Moderate high bitterness. Less well rounded than most of the over the top Stone IPA offerings.

Bomber from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours amber gold with a beige head. Serious complex hop aroma. Nose burn! Full bodied or nearly. Damn but this is hoppy. Boston Beer should try this before another attempt at a West Coast IPA(check SA Rebel). There’s firm caramel backbone, but a lot of hop has to move before it shows up. It’s juicy citrus. Serious hop in the mouth. So much so it’s behaving as astringent. Grapefruit zest is serious stuff. Farking fantastic.
