A Zesty Double India Pale Ale with Grapefruit Peel

We’ve made a hell of a lot of beers since 1996. Probably thousands at this point. Some stick around for decades, somefor a few years and some are brief visits, gracing us with their hoppy presence fora short time before becoming fond memories. Occasionally stars, planets and brewing schedules align and we bring back one of these ephemeral creations. In fallof 2014 we created a draft-only version of this delicious double India pale ale. Its bitter, zesty grapefruit peel infusion created a bright accent to flavors of pine resin and fresh citrus well in advance of the explosionof fruited beers we’re all reveling in atthe moment. We never stopped thinking about it, so a long five years later, we’re bringing back Stone Grapefruit Slam IPA for round two. It’s a link to the past planted delightfully in the present.

Draft: Tangerine and grapefruit nose. Shimmering amber, thin head, decent lace. Rose hips and grapefruit flavor. Medium body soft carbonation, alcohol barely noticeable. Every IPA from Stone is a winner. Know that.

Bottle in the hotel room, SD, from Surf Liquor, SM 20/04/14. Clear golden amber with a well appointed off white head that thins over time. Nose is pine resin, bitter grapefruit, orange peel, caramel malt, light spice, light perfume. Taste comprises bitter tropicana, straw, mandarin, pine bite, orange pith, perfumed tones, bubblegum, caramel malt. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi aggressive hop bitterness in a drying close. Solid enough DIPA.

Tap at 23 Beerz. PRetty orange-gold color. Rather faint, unconvincing nose of grapefruit and honey. Sweet flavor, seems to have some diacetyl, flavors of grapefruit and honey. Heavy. Just ok. Quite a disappointment.

Bomber. Bottled 1/29/14. Wow, another old hop-forward ale for me. I swear, I meant to buy these beers fresher. Aroma is grapefruity, burnt caramel. Pours hazy cantaloupe with a medium off-white lacy head. It actually tastes like the bitter pith of a grapefruit. Tastes old, unappealing. I know it says to drink fresh, but shit, this should still be drinkable after a couple months. It barely is. Maybe this was delicious when it was fresher. It’s not right now, though.

22 oz. bottle, pours a cloudy golden orange with a medium off-white head. Nose brings out loads of resinous hops, substantial sticky caramel malt, and grapefruit peel. Flavour is certainly a grapefruit slam, with shitloads of grapefruit peel / zest, big resinous hops, and a big fat caramel malt backbone that makes the intense grapefruit less intrusive. Finishes zesty and with a bit of residual sugar. Excellent stuff, though I prefer regular Ruination.

22 oz. bottle from 7-11 Kittery, ME. Clear amber with a golden hue. Light head retention. Aroma of big grapefruit, dried fruit, hint of pine and some honey. Hints of grass. The nose is really awesome.

Taste of light grapefruit peel, citrus rind, pine, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of floral/pine bitterness on the finish. Some with lingering notes of pine resin, weak traces of grass. Light malt balance and really works as a standard IPA. I was expecting some much more bold from the aroma. Good, not great.

Bottle. Amber beer with a cream head. Grapefruit and pine aroma. Pine and grapefruit flavor. Medium bodied. Very good bitterness. Grapefruit and rind lingers with light pine.

22 oz bottle purchased at Royal Liquors in Kansas City, Missouri. Bottled on 01/23/14 printed on the neck of the bottle. The pour is mostly clear golden orange with a well formed 2 inch egg white head. The aroma is citrus sweet, grapefruit peel, pine resin, and a nice caramel malt coming through. Fairly muted in general. The taste sweet citrus malt blend, followed closely by sharp bitterness from the grapefruit peel.Aftertaste is more bitterness and evident alcohol heat. The palate is medium bodied, soft carbonation, dry bitter hot finish. Certainly a beer that showcases grapefruit peel.

Dark golden amber color. Massively intense grapefruit. Huge huge Grapefruits in the tounge with bitterness and tartness that makes you want to rip off your tounge. One of the most intense over the top beers every. Kills you taste bud and kicks you in the nuts. Fuck me, this intense. Definitely a sipping beer. Wow. Lager lovers don’t apply.
