A Zesty Double India Pale Ale with Grapefruit Peel
We’ve made a hell of a lot of beers since 1996. Probably thousands at this point. Some stick around for decades, somefor a few years and some are brief visits, gracing us with their hoppy presence fora short time before becoming fond memories. Occasionally stars, planets and brewing schedules align and we bring back one of these ephemeral creations. In fallof 2014 we created a draft-only version of this delicious double India pale ale. Its bitter, zesty grapefruit peel infusion created a bright accent to flavors of pine resin and fresh citrus well in advance of the explosionof fruited beers we’re all reveling in atthe moment. We never stopped thinking about it, so a long five years later, we’re bringing back Stone Grapefruit Slam IPA for round two. It’s a link to the past planted delightfully in the present.

Bottle. Deep golden body with a frothy white diminishing head. Light aroma, especially for a double ipa, of resin, grapefruit and toasted grain. The flavor is lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. It finishes lightly sweet and moderately to heavily bitter. Medium body, watery/sticky texture, lively carbonation. Bitterness overwhelms other flavors which are pretty much just resin and grapefruit with a hint of orange peel.

A golden IPA with a thin white head. In aroma, a fragrant IPA with biscuit malt with floral and resinous, light catnip and funk, very nice. In mouth, a nice balanced IPA with biscuit malt, citrus and floral hops, grapefruit pulp, very nice. Bottle at OttBottleShare July 2014.

Hazy gold with a fleeting white head. Fresh citrus hops and citrus fruit nose. Tastes like an IPA with a half shot of grapefruit juice added to it. Bitter and crisp. Not a big syrupy Imperial IPA mess.

Super rich copper and orange coloured body with a bright glow and a thin, one centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of yes, grapefruit, rich malt, earth, alcohol, apricots and a rather perfumey and floral hop note. Medium to Full-bodied; Very rich bitterness definitely derived from the grapefruit instead of the hops, but a decent malt backbone and a strong yet regulated earthy flavour, but the bitterness is strong and some hops show through, but this is all about grapefruit. Aftertaste is quite pungent and is bitterness and alcohol - not much left in between and no real complexity. Overall, just like the name of the beer implies - grapefruit, hops and a pungent and powerful beer, that’s it on the label and that’s it in the bottle. Good, but nothing to rave about or wish for seconds of. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Washington (Foggy Bottom), DC on 19-February-2014 for US$9.99 sampled at home in Washington on 12-June-2014.

Lightly hazy deep gold beer, good fluffy pale cream coloured head. Palate is airy and softish, very fine carbonation. Soft creamy malt, sweetish. Lovely resinous pine hops. Floral orange and lemon and indeed a little grapefruit zing. Touch of sherbet. Hops spice towards the smooth finish. Very nice indeed. I’d forgotten this was a Stone beer and was looking for this great new Stochasticity brewery! Duh!

Pours bright gold. The liquid is clear and without sediment. The head is medium-sized, white and reasonably sticky. Retention is average to good with moderate lacing. The aroma is big on grapefruit. I smelled it as soon as the cap’s seal broke. It’s hard to tell whether the intensity of grapefruit aroma comes from hops or the grapefruit peel, but the peel is definitely there and contributes a more pithy aroma than you typically get from any hops. By that, I mean that you can really smell the grapefruit oil in the beer. It’s deep and a touch harsh. Underneath the bitter grapefruit note, there’s a surprisingly gentle floral aroma. It’s a nice touch of hop sweetness and delicacy to act as a counterpoint to the grapefruit. Similarly, the taste has a big oily citrus bitterness on top of brighter, sweeter and more delicate flavors. In the background, there’s some pale malt and honeysuckle hops, but the grapefruit note dominates it. Carbonation is unremarkable. Mouthfeel is otherwise fairly harsh. I like bitter DIPAs more than most, and I wouldn’t say that this beer is ultimately all that bitter, but it is somewhat harsh. It really does have a grapefruit rind flavor for better and worse. Interesting beer, but I kinda wish that they had gone with a different fruit rind choice for the addition.

Bouteille 660ml. Carbonatation moyenne, corps moyen-dense. Un peu trop malté à mon goût.

$9.79 bomber from Wine Warehouse, Charlottesville. Pours a crisp golden-amber with 2" of fluffy off-white head. Smells of grapefruit. Tastes of grapefruit and caramel malts. I expected more grapefruit... for an IPA to add actual grapefruit to a beer that already tastes like grapefruit should equal a grapefruit overload, which this just wasn’t.
