Eyedrinkale pulls out another killer... penguin that is. And an old one 2002 bottle. Poured dark amber with some lacing. Aroma is strong - a very mellowy old ale - definite presence with the plum/raison alcohol but with a strong fruit presence underneath that. Taste is amazingly mellow - no alcohol presence at all. Really strong heavy fruit flavor - heavy cherry. Grainy and malty as well. Finishes with absolutely no bitterness.

Very attractive, an orange-tinted ruby, with an even firm layer of foam which dissipates gradually leaving a pitted creamy head that clings just right. Nicely clear and almost glowing. Aroma is a bit of a letdown, with a strong earthiness joined with winter spices of nutmeg and ginseng. Highly reminiscent of Anchor's OSA but without the malt layers to support it. Surprisingly, the flavor makes me take that back: a nicely pillowed backbone of toasted biscuity malt, a complement of earthiness. The spices are subdued, mainly present in the aftertaste, and not well defined. Hop flavors are difficult to identify but are well balanced in the semi-dry finish. Not too bad for a spiced ale, although I think they could do better after a few more wintry attempts at it.
