Around the brewery, we listen to a lot of reggae, drink a fair share of coffee, and are devoted to our barrel aging program. In 2015, we had a one off imperial stout aging in barrels for close to a year. These barrels had a rich chocolate vanilla character, but needed a boost. Stauf’s Coffee Roasters, of Columbus Ohio, nailed the perfect roast on some authentic Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, to compliment the barrel aged stout. Champion Ground was born! The Illustration on the label is of Charlie Ace’s Swing-a-ling mobile record shack which was notorious for broadcasting the “Champion Sound!” Our version does this with fresh grounds and good vibes all around!

Draft @ RateBeer Best 2017. Pours a black color with a small tan head. Has a roasted malty woody bourbon and coffee aroma. Roasted malty coffee woody bourbon flavor with hints of vanilla. Has a roasted malty woody bourbon coffee finish.

[1/28/17] Bottle/Draught at RateBeer Best festival in Santa Rosa. Black. Bourbon, vanilla, roast, lots of coffee, chocolate, sweet. Full-bodied. Great.

Sample at RB Best. Pours opaque black with a medium creamy tan head that dissipates slowly with good lacing. Aroma is bourbon, molasses and chocolate, some coffee, cinnamon and hazelnut. Flavor is medium bitter and actually pretty lightly sweet. Full body and creamy mouthfeel. Quite nice.

My first beer from this micro brewery in Ohio, many thanks to Ster again for sharing! BBA stout with Jamaican coffee added, showing a creamy, thick, densely moussy, pale yellowish beige head and black colour with hazy mahogany brown edges, only visible up till one millimeter off the edge. Pleasant bouquet of indeed coffee but not exagerratedly so, vanilla, bourbon clearly noticeable, sherry, candied fig, black chocolate, pear syrup, wet wood, chestnut paste, leather, olive oil. Sweetness of candied date and fig in the onset but also residual brown sugar sweetness and a light umami accent, soft carbo, creamy and very oily, slick mouthfeel, filling but somehow a bit thinner than expected from a 11% imperial stout; deeply nutty and toasted bittersweet maltiness, black bitter chocolate, evolving to a coffeeish roasted bitter finish where the roasted malts and the added coffee melt into each other, but the sugary sweetness remains as well; lovely drying woodiness in the end, relatively subtle but releasing vanilla-ish oak aromas retronasally, long and dry finish, boozy bourbon but not overdone. Somewhat restrained in all its aspects compared to many other, better known American BBA stouts, but this beer does everything in absolutely perfect balance, without any component overpowering another. Mouthfeel could have been a bit thicker for me but that’s just being picky I guess, this is a very lovely, rich and multi-layered stout in all respects.

Bottle thanks to George. Pours black with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is cocoa, roast, bourbon, wood. Thick body, chewy, roast, dark bourbon, dark chocolate, smoke finish, very good.

On tap at Jackie O’s pub in Athens. Deep brown appearance with a brown head. Aroma has rich toffee, caramel, whiskey, oak, and chocolate. Medium full body. Really nice toasted quality. Smooth bourbon. Not overly bitter coffee. Great.

Poured from a 2016 375 ml bottle. Aroma is fairly chocolate forward with a balanced, moderately strong coffee note. Some light dark fruit notes with some faint bourbon and oak. A light nuttiness from the coffee. Pours black with a light mocha head that recedes to a film that lingers on the edges. No lacing and medium small legs. Flavor has a medium light sweetness. Moderate coffee notes that add a slight fruit and nut note. Light roast note with some dark caramel and toffee. Light alcohol spice with medium light bourbon and hints of oak. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, a nice coffee stout, but its lacking something especially in the mouthfeel. Nice coffee character with some decent chocolate character.
