And so it was written.......
According to Mayan and Hopi calendars the "transition from one world age to another'' will happen on December 21, 2012.
As an homage to the "transition" DC Brau has concocted an Imperial IPA named "On the Wings of Armageddon".
OTWOA is a single hop blend* beer utilizing Falconers Flight™. Brewed with just enough Pale malt, Cara-60, CaraPils and Malted wheat to carry the intense hop character onto the pallet.
At first glance, it has an orange hue in the glass with a viscus, rocky head that refuses to dissipate. Upon first sniff there are dominate aromas of citrus, white grapes and grapefruit with light bread and biscuit notes. After the first sip we taste a mellow bitterness that only grows as more is consumed. Moderately carbonated, deceptively smooth, refreshingly dry and extremely heady for a beer at 9.5% ABV.

Aroma: It has an aroma of grapefruit/tropical notes, pine, and pale malts
Appearance: Pours a dark orange color with a small head and spotty lace
Flavor: The flavor is mildly sweet, with a good amount of fruit/pine bitterness
Palate: The body is fairly light for the style, soft and a little thin, with a rather dry finish
Overall Impression: Pretty nice example of a DIPA. It is pretty dry and drinks pretty nicely. It's a little thin, but not in a bad way. Interesting take on the style for sure.

Can received in trade, dated April 11, 2014.
Into a tulip.
The appearance has a hazy copper/brown color with a one finger white foamy head that once it dies there’s some sporadic lacing.
The smell bittersweet citrus hops to caramel malts almost perfectly combined.
The taste is bittersweet once again through the previously mentioned flavors.
On the palate, it sits about a medium on the body with a modestly dosed coating of caramel to citrus hops laying across my mouth and tongue.
Overall, in my opinion, this is a great DIPA well worthy of having again. I had another can and thought it was excellent with some tuna and crackers.

Nice booze, caramelized malt and hops here. Pours cloudy orange with good head and lacing. Some light florals caused by mix between alcohol and high hops. Citrus. Can.

Sampled from a 12 oz can this beer poured a dark caramel-brown color with a huge foamy orange-tan head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was tangy with vague fruity and floral hops and a bit of citrus. The flavor was bitter and tangy with a moderately strong floral and herbal hop presence, a bit of perfume and underneath a tangy sweetness of honey, bread and sour caramel. Long tangy floral, herbal, sour caramel and honey finish. Moderately full boded. Ok.

Can (12/27/13 batch) poured into a tulip style goblet. Pours a nice dark gold almost amber color with lots of tiny floaters and about a finger of off-white head, nice lacing. Aromas of citrus, dank, floral, pine/resin, light tropical fruit. Tasting notes of big grapefruit citrus, dank, pine/resin, floral and piney hops. Nice hop kick on the finish. Medium body with a bitter and semi-dry finish, juicy mouthfeel. Pretty smooth for the ABV.
Had this a day after it was canned and I don’t notice much change since then, holds up very well. Definitely my favorite from DC Brau and it ranks up there with Pliny and Heady in my opinion.

Can: sample via Travlr, Shrubber85.... Poured hazy orange with a small, off-white head. Pineapple, orange, captain black pipe tobacco, (?) aroma. Taste is creamy, tropical fruit, pine/spruce bitter. Grapefruit peel. A little coconut hint. A nicely done 2IPA.....

Can (thanks to Travlr). Orange malt and grapefruit peel aroma. Hazy golden yellow with small head. Sweet orange malt and moderately bitter orange peel/pine flavor. Alcohol very well hidden . A very tasty beer.

Can, thanks to nimbleprop. Pours a muddy orange color with a thick inch of creamy beige head. Thick lacing and good retention. Ripe citrus and pine in the nose, sweet overall. Heavy hop flavor and not much detectable malt presence to balance... florals, light citrus, and heavy resin. Finishes a little dry and puckering. Not harsh. but not what I consider an easy sipper. Bold.

So I’m sitting at the bar and Gene just starts making cans appear! This guy is bad ass. Thanks Colonel. Pours a cloudy orange color with a large white head. A sweet citrus and candy nose. Light heat, resin, big bitterness, apricot, soapy, green bitter hops. Light oats, more bitter pine. Quite nice. Quite flavorful. A tad bit harsh.

Today, I get to review a fresh can of OTWOA from one of my blog readers based in DC. He sent me two cans (insisting 6 but I’m trying to cut back on calories so 2 is enough). I enjoyed this in a snifter at ice cold fridge temp.
A - I would call this beer a cloudy burnt orange with caramel hues. A nice 2 finger head stuck around for a bit.
S - Nose is a mix of tangerines, grapefruit, zest from an orange and some pine cone undertones. I don’t get a lot of malt on the nose but you can tell it’s there. It’s quite a sticky smell that makes you snap to attention. Crack one of these before 8AM and you’re gonna snap to attention.
T - Nice taste overall. I’m not sure how the 9.2% ABV is so well hidden. There’s Ruby Red grapefruit juice + grapefruit peel along with lemony sweetness. There is a minor mineral like finish with a bunch of bitterness that sticks around like chewing on tree bark for a solid 10 minutes after you take a gulp.
M - Sweet, resinous, lingering with some clove essence.
O - It’s unfair to compare this to Heady topper but everything kind of makes you want to. Two locally distributed beers around 9% only in cans. However, this beer is lacking two things. The first is that I couldn’t drink more than a 12oz can of this..the ABV and sticky bitterness creeps up and holds on for a while. Heady in 16oz cans I can drink 2-3 in a night no problem. Heady lacks resin and brings this sweet floral citrus hoppiness that delivers time and time again. I’ll stick with Heady but this is certainly a great IPA!
