Belgian-Style Brown Ale Brewed with Yams, Molasses, Maple Syrup and Spices

Brewed with 17 lbs. of yams per barrel (in other words, a lot of yams!), this autumn seasonal is a different take on the “pumpkin” beer style. Brewed with cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, molasses, and maple syrup. Rather than ferment the beer with our traditional Belgian yeast strain, this version was 100% fermented with brettanomyces, adding a dry, earthy quality to the traditionally bold and spicy beer.

On tap at The Beer Junction, pours a cloudy orangey amber with a small beige head. Aroma of sweet yams, some caramel, maple syrup and nutmeg. Flavour of sweet yams as well that dominate, balanced by caramel, maple syrup and candied sugar. The 10% is no where to be detected. Very easy-to-drink and full-flavoured. Very good stuff - shits all over the BA version.

Bottle, 75cl, at Patricks. A nice beige head sits on top of an orange-golden body. It’s pleasantly spiced in the aroma, with caramel maltyness and a touch of citrus. Cinnamon being the most evident spice in both aroma and flavor. Oranges, some alcohol, caramel and a nice maltyness in the flavor, some acidic notes too. Full-bodied, and with a pleasant carbonation level. Some fruityness and acidity in the end. A nice, balanced beer with a pleasant use of spices. 120317

75 cl. bottle @ home // (a) dark amber brown with a light ruby hue, small slightly tanned head // (s) sweet molasses (not exaggerated but blended with the rest), syrup, sweet spices, brown sugar & sweet vegetables (the yams but slightly vague in the nose, not necessarily yam-like) // (t) maple syrup, cooked yams (feels more cooked than baked in a way), sweet yams, wild New Zealand honey, molasses, caramel, going into definite Belgian yeast, quite Belgian after the initial flavours, hint of esters, goes immediately into sweet, cooked yams, drenched in maple syrup, sweet vegetables, spices, slightly bitter, almost hint of booze finish // (b) Belgian yeast & maple syrup body, full, lively, sharp carbonation // very weird, extremely well-done & highly original // purchased @ Hopduvel

Pours cloudy deep amber with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, toffee, cinemon and fruits. Taste is meidum sweet and light bitter with a long sweet, caramel, spicy finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Enjoyed from bottle at Bad Apple in Chicago, IL while enjoying a gluttonous meal with friends. This stuff was awesome. Appearance very cloudy dark amber with a thin white rim. Aroma is like fall, definitely get yams, brown sugar, maple syrup, molasses, a lot going on. Taste is like thanksgiving, very thick, yams definitely come out more. I can’t say this is really a ’pumpkin beer’, there was a lot going on with it and I didn’t get any pumpkin like quality from it. With that stated, very good stuff, happy to have imbibed.

Bottle. Dark reddish/brown with a medium white head. Sweet aroma of spices, syrup and fruit. The taste was very sweet but still quite pleasant. Spices, malt, syrup and fruit. Reminded of a christmas beer.

750 ml bottle @ Patricks. Deep red body with a medium sized off-white head. Aroma of sweet, dry fruit, spices and a hint of vanilla, quite vinous. Flavor is fruity, quite sweet, some malt, spices and raisins. An unusually beer with a complex flavor, nice body and fine aftertaste. The flavors are so integrated that it’s difficult to detect what it is, but it’s for sure a nice beer.

Bottle (2011 edition) from De Bierkoning. Clear copper to brown color. Off white to beige head (not much). Aroma: sweet, caramel/toffee, sweet fruit, sweet spices (cinnamon, anise as well as clove), maybe a hint of maple syrup. Flavor is rather sweet and spicy. Alcohol is quite well hidden. Medium body, velvetty mouthfeel. Finishes notably spicy. Nice, but worth the €15,-?
