Belgian-Style Brown Ale Brewed with Yams, Molasses, Maple Syrup and Spices
Brewed with 17 lbs. of yams per barrel (in other words, a lot of yams!), this autumn seasonal is a different take on the “pumpkin” beer style. Brewed with cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, molasses, and maple syrup. Rather than ferment the beer with our traditional Belgian yeast strain, this version was 100% fermented with brettanomyces, adding a dry, earthy quality to the traditionally bold and spicy beer.

Bottle @ Dan’s house, courtesy of Jason. Thanks man! Dark maroon appearance with a light brown head that dissipates pretty quickly. Spicy molasses, maple syrup, caramel, toffee aroma. Thick caramel malty, toffee, thick molasses, maple syrup flavor that’s pretty spicy. Syrupy mouth feel.

0.75l bottle shared with ClubGonzo @ Olympen, Oslo. This pours a clouded copperish body packed with floating floaters and a nice lasting medium-sized off-white head. The aroma is leafy with sour - almost tart tones, hints of wood, syrup and not-right red currants. It has nice near sticky-oily mouthfeel and the carbonation level is average. Flavors are maple-sweet, tones of earthy-leafs, dried fruits before it ends in a mild caramel sweet finish and a lasting peppery-spiced and slightly herbal aftertaste. Hell yeah, this is good stuff!

Pizzeria Paradiso, Dupont, DC 10oz ($4.50hh): Pours a brownish color with a beige head. Aroma is of maple, malt, Belgian yeast, sugar, and vanilla. Taste has a lot of those same things. Basically, the maple is fortunately not overwhelming, but it adds a good amount of sweetness, which isn’t cloying. The yeast is a good call and gives the beer a wee bit of that Belgian funk. So I guess I taste the yams, but it is hard to tell exactly where they are in this beer. In any case, this doesn’t exactly taste like any other beer that I have ever had and for that alone, it deserves some props.

Draft @ Sunset Grill and Tap, Allston, MA. Served in tumbler. Hazy brown nice full thick white head. Great retention with sheets of lace. Aroma is yeasty with caramel, brown sugar, clove and nutmeg spice. The flavor is pretty much what what you get from the nose AND very tasty. Great blend of maple, brown sugar, caramel, honey, and vegetables. Thin palate, mild carbonation. A hint of ABV burn towards the finish. Overall excellent.

Shipped to me by my wife on a trip to Portland. Sampled from a 750 ml brown bottle this beer poured a very cloudy brown color with a small creamy-soapy tan head that faded quickly and left minimal lacing. The aroma was pineapple, nutmeg, caramel, sweet malts and vague spices. The flavor was semi-sweet with pineapple, pine, brown sugar and maple dominating and faint undertones of oregano and nutmeg. The finish was long, sweet and spicy with lingering caramel. Fairly full bodied and nicely smooth. Nice.
