Belgian-Style Brown Ale Brewed with Yams, Molasses, Maple Syrup and Spices
Brewed with 17 lbs. of yams per barrel (in other words, a lot of yams!), this autumn seasonal is a different take on the “pumpkin” beer style. Brewed with cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, molasses, and maple syrup. Rather than ferment the beer with our traditional Belgian yeast strain, this version was 100% fermented with brettanomyces, adding a dry, earthy quality to the traditionally bold and spicy beer.

Draft at Falling Rock, Denver. Unfiltered red-brown. Thin oliyhead. Herbal maple and malt aroma. Soft on the palate, with a some herbal, medicinal qualities. Smooth brown malt tones. Very flowery, intriguing (wish Id known it was a yam beer at the time), with some fruity tones shining the more it’s sipped. OK, but not stellar by any means.

Brown ale. Another low carbonation beer from Bruery. Sweet start with ginger and something else (yams?). Also has a sweet mid but very hard to pin down. The unusual mix of inredients are well blended giving an overall quite unique and pleasing taste. The finish is also sweet and aromatic. A little carbonation would not go amiss!

Bottled. Deep rubyish brown colour with a small off-white head. Aroma is wood, some sugary notes, caramel malts, some mild spices, syrup as well as some mild herbal and fruity notes. Flavour is sweet caramel malts with some slight yeastyness, syrup, burnt sugar and some mild notes of resin and mild notes of honey.

Bottle: Pours a muddy, caramel brown color with a short lived beige head. Spicey aroma with cloves, lemon zest, and faint nutmeg. Taste is sweet and potent with spice. Maple is prevalent. Yams I guess... haven’t had one of those since I was 12 or so. Brown sugar and cloves. It works well together and finishes with gusto. Nice fall brew.

750ml bottle. Poured a red-brown color with a small head. Aroma was maple, brown sugar, malts. Flavor was sweet candy, sugar, malts, maple syrup. It’s an interesting beer - perhaps a bit sweet for my own liking, but it has an interesting gimmick - not often can one say you’ve had a yam beer.

750 ml bottle at Proof in DC, shared with Laura from Germany. Hazy brown, tan head. Aroma of caramel and light spice. Very sweet taste, the maple really comes through, as well as nuts and wood. Not bad if you like sweet beers.

750 ml bottle, shared with Brenn79, poured into a tumbler. Aroma is Belgian yeast, maple syrup, tart apples. Pours a hazy orange with a large head that dissipates after a few minutes, leaving a thick blanket of foam. Taste is sweet and sour; meaty finish. Along with the maple syrup, I taste cinnamon, clove, banana. Strong alcohol presence. Carbonation is soft, body is full, sticky mouthfeel. Very different. Good, but not excellent.

Dark (clear) ruby color, steady off-white head. Wheat, banana, yeast, clove and ginger in the nose. Crisp carbonation. Christmas spicey (cinnamon, clove), Belgian yeasts, some molasses, quite alcoholic. Mouthfeel is reasonably balanced, although alcohol is present.
