Belgian-Style Brown Ale Brewed with Yams, Molasses, Maple Syrup and Spices
Brewed with 17 lbs. of yams per barrel (in other words, a lot of yams!), this autumn seasonal is a different take on the “pumpkin” beer style. Brewed with cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, molasses, and maple syrup. Rather than ferment the beer with our traditional Belgian yeast strain, this version was 100% fermented with brettanomyces, adding a dry, earthy quality to the traditionally bold and spicy beer.

(Bottle at Olutkellari Helsinki) Poured mahogany coloured and hazy with small and white head. Aroma contained malts, spices and Belgian yeast. Palate was medium bodied and stinging with medium carbonation. Flavours were spices, malts, saltiness, Belgian yeast, sweetness, molasses, hint of dried plum and mildly bitterness. Aftertaste was spicy and bitter.

Location: 750 ml bottle from Gilly's, 2/5/10
Aroma: The nose has lots of spice, some maple syrup, and some caramel malts
Appearance: Pours a dark hazy reddish color, with a thin off-white head
Flavor: It's somewhat sweet with a lot of spice to it, yam/pumpkin flavor is there too
Palate: A medium bodied beer with a soft carbonation, and somewhat oily texture
Overall Impression: This one definitely didn't need to be consumed too cool. Once it warms to a reasonable temperature it becomes a pretty solid beer. There is a good amount of spice to this one. I liked it, it isn't the greatest, but it is pretty solid.

Bottle. Dark brown color, hardly any head. Molasses and tropical fruit in the aroma. Little carbon. Sugary sweet flavor with molasses and dried tropical fruit. Ginger and marmalade. Alcoholic. Too sweet and onedimensional.

Bottled. A hazy red beer with a thin off-white head. The aroma has notes of spices, pumpkin, caramel, and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, pumkin pie, cinnamon, and other spices, leading to a dry spicy finish. The alcohol leaves a slight burn in the throat.

Bottle 75 cl. Pours a cloudy deep amber with basically no head. Sweet and syrupy nose with a distinct spiciness - although a little hard to define what spices. Very solid body, basically no carbonation. Accents of pumpkins and cinnamon - hard to grasp that no pumpkins were used! Warming alcoholic finish. Interesting. 231109
