I was happy indeed to find a nationally-available dark beer, but it doesn’t quite live up to the standard set by the Pils. On the sweet side, but you sense you are tasting all kinds of added sugars rather than malts. The roasted taste is also lacking, as are the hops. Drinkable, and not an altogether bad dark beer for a country without a beer tradition, but not all that good.

330 ml clear bottle, brought home from Turkey by my wife. ABV is 6.1%. Dark reddish brown colour, big greyish beige head. Smells "thin" and metallic, also notes of cooked vegetables and wet cardboard. The flavour is first tolerably malty with notes of brown bread and some caramel, without being very sweet. Some fruity acidity in the middle. Dull finish, minimal hops. Clearly drinkable, but boring. Don’t expect to find anything much better than this in Turkey, though.

Sampled at the 2009 Canada's Cup of Beer at UBC. Pours a dark amber. Much better than the regular Efes Pilsner, but nothing too impressive.

Bottle in the hotel in Istanbul. Yet another disappointment, a bit better than the Efes Pilsner but not much to cheer over. Reminded a bit of a Newcastle Brown Ale, but paler on everything.

12oz bottle at the Brickskeller. Interestingly only has a label around the neck. Brown amber color, with a big frothy head. Hits you with that Eastern-European noble spicy hoppiness, pretty nice actually. A Dunkel with some Pils sensibilities. Pleasant surprise. Medium bodied, well done for the style.

clear dark brown, small smooth yellow head. aroma is caramel, malts. flavor is sweet malty, but also a bit dry. nutty, alc well hidden, flavor somewhat between a pale ale and a malt liqer. reminds me of carls special, but a bit darker and sweeter.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a longlasting off-white head. Has a roasted malty caramel aroma. Slightly sweetish roasted malty caramel flavor. Has a sweet roasted malty caramel finish.

bottle, pours dark carmel, thin off white head. Light carmel malt and candi sugar nose. Light sweet malt and a roasted character in the finish. Not bad, but boring.

33 cL bottle from Vintage Cellar in Blacksburg, VA. Pours a dark amber color with a large head. Poor head retention and lacing. As soon as the bottle opens I get a note of roasty skunk, which is bizarre. Aroma is roasty with notes of tobacco, caramel and dark fruits. Taste is molasses, brown sugar, raisin and grain. Cloyingly sweet. Medium bodied. Not a good experience.
