With a great, gleaming moustache, knee-deep in a woodland mash tun, Jack D’Or the barleycorn conjures himself into beer. Helped along by the other “Pretty Things”, the mischievous hops and yeast – a magnificent fester will no doubt ensue! One of the most joyful transformations in nature, better than any rabbit from a hat, beer is the result.

Jack D'Or is a saison americaine: a belgian farmhouse ale with American hops. Dry, bitter, and contrary, this is a beer for all seasons. Available year round, for fun times and happy days. Cheers!

Pours gold with a large white head.Nose shows herbal and citrus notes, sweet honey and saison yeast. Very inviting.Very similar flavours; more honey, saison yeast, herbal/spicy hops and some grapefruit/orange peel. An assertive bitterness presents itself in the finish.Great moderately high carbonation works perfectly.

Bottle: Pours a tangerine orange color with a fleeting white head. Nose is mild, dry florals, yeast, and seemingly creamed corn. As it warms, the florals open up a bit and it has more of a spicey/lively floral smell. Potent florals in the taste; herbal and barnyard. Good yeast flavors and mild barnyard. A bit of fresh rye bread before finishing with a crisp floral and yeast flurry. Overall good, but not great offering of the Americanized saison.

22 ounce bottle. Cloudy pale yellow gold color topped by a small creamy white head. Crisp fresh citrusy, yeasty, bready malt aroma. Tart citrus fruity malt flavor with obvious notes of wheat and oats. Very complex and charismatic with a wonderful nod to the Franco/Belgian brewers like DuPont and Fantome’. Medium bodied with a delicious dry bitter finish. Outstanding! One of the best American made Saisons I have had. Worth seeking out.

Bomber bought @ bierkompass.de. Pours hazy golden with a rather small frothy and creamy white head that leaves lots of sticky lacing and trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is rather subtle, tiny sweet, tiny fruity and tiny spicy with crackers, grapefruit juice, hay, lemon zest, white pepper corns, lemon balm, cilantro, cereal and very subtle hints of funk. Taste is bitter, fruity and tiny spicy with crackers, cereal, grapefruit juice, grapefruit rinds, lemon zest, lemongrass, hay, dry soil, white pepper corns and coriander. Mouthfeel is slightly crisp, dry and light to medium bodied. Finish is bitter with crackers, grapefruit rinds, lemon zest, lemon balm, dry soil, hay and pepper corns. Greatly drinkable and tasty. Perfect with the smoked salmon we tried it with.

Small off-white head over clear orange-golden beer; not much carbonation visible. Aromatic hops’ nose, bit of caramel, faint green herb as parsley. Not very powerful. Quite bitter taste. Flavour as from a tisane, dry straw-like tea. Point of (dried) citruspeel. Feels much more carbonated than it looks. Quite slick, but hardly more than light bodied. Drinks away easily, and reading the blurb hints they’ve hit what they wanted. I just can’t find it very exciting - and I’m already happy its not called filet américain...
