With a great, gleaming moustache, knee-deep in a woodland mash tun, Jack D’Or the barleycorn conjures himself into beer. Helped along by the other “Pretty Things”, the mischievous hops and yeast – a magnificent fester will no doubt ensue! One of the most joyful transformations in nature, better than any rabbit from a hat, beer is the result.

Jack D'Or is a saison americaine: a belgian farmhouse ale with American hops. Dry, bitter, and contrary, this is a beer for all seasons. Available year round, for fun times and happy days. Cheers!

66 cl. bottle sampled / shared @ Tim’s De Molen & assorted beers tasting // procured @ Hopduvel // Pours a bright golden with a white head. Smell is floral, quite a bit of spices, mellow, soft with strong yeast presence, clean, tad sharp & BE style yeast, touch peel, light yoghurt & peel. Taste is bitter yeast with spices, floral, oranges, BE yeast, lots of it, herbs, lightly chalky, grass, peel & some light fruits. Very drying & tad sharp. Not bad, not the most stellar but not bad. As with the other beers from them, I have had so far i like the artwork.

30/XII/12 - 1Pt. 6Fl. Oz. bottle from De Hopduvel (Gent) @ home: De Molen & assorted beers tasting - bottled: VIII/12 (2012-1428) Thanks to 77ships for sharing the bottle!

Clear light golden beer, small irregular head, bit stable, non adhesivE. Aroma: citrus, bit soapy, peppery, grassy hops, grains, dry. MF: ok carbon, medium to light body. Taste: yeasty, citrus, very grassy bitter hops, a bit herbal. Aftertaste: very bitter, dray, bit medicinal, some spices, bit peppery, bitter ending. Not so great actually... way too bitter for a saison.

July 2011 bottling. From Beers of the World. Malty nose, pils, with bread, honey, citrus, grass, light dust and basement. Hops are a bit diminished due to time, but they are there. Cloudy, oily gold with lace. Very hoppy flavor, pepper, hay, grass; bitter and earthy. Honey malts to balance. A soft, silky, oily palate. The lees were very bitter and nasty. The rest was good.

65 cl bottle @ hotel room, Las Vegas. Bottled in 03/2012
Aroma is somewhat fruity with yeast and citrus. Flavour is somewhat tart with earthy notes and hints of citrus. Becomes rather spicy at the end of the glass. A typical farmhouse saison with bretta – but good.

0.65l bottle from Patricks, Kristiansand shared with and courtesy of Beer2 - no, 3000! A light cloudy yellow-golden one with a small light sidesticking just off-white head. On the aroma it's at first nothing like a saison, but after inhaling a couple of times and giving the beer a few moments to get used to the Norwegian Pub-air, that light yeasty with a tiny hint of sour, leafy and light malt-biscuity perfumed tone really opens up and sticks it's head out. Flavors just like I like my saisons; Subtle yeasty, autumn leafs, lightly perfumed with a nice tone of malty and spicy clementine zest. Really interesting and actually quite tasty! Thanks for sharing! 29.03.2012

(bottle) Cloudy, pale golden colour with a medium-sized, slightly yellow foamy head. Belgian-yeasty aroma with grainy and slightly bready pale malt, accompanied by herbal and flowery aroma hops. Moderately bitter flavour, medium to light bodied with a moderately prickly carbonation. Dry mouthfeel, subtle grainy malty base with herbal and slightly grassy hops, leading into a dry and moderately bitter hoppy, also quite lasting finish. A nice interpretation of the style. 29.II.12

(Draught at Ölbaren, Copenhagen, 17 Feb 2012) Hazy golden colour with creamy, white head. Malty nose with notes of grass, yeast, ripe apples and grassy hops. Malty, fruity taste with notes of tropical fruit, bread, hints of yeast and grassy hops in the finish. Medium body, with balanced sweetness. Not the best saison I’ve tried, but drinkable.

Tap. Hazy yellow with a large white head [the carbonation was getting out of hand with this one and it was being taken off: big thanks to the off-duty staff member at the Local Taphouse who inveigled that glass from behind the bar]. Aroma is floral, with orange blossoms, coriander , vanilla, sour citrus fruits, some musty notes. Taste has a good balance of sweet, sour and bitter - it leans rather a lot towards bitterness and it lingers in the dry finish, but despite being rather new world citrusy it doesn’t dominate. The tartness is unusual for a tap saison and is quite feral. Good stuff.
