First batch - 2008.
Second batch - August 2021.

Directly inspired by traditional saisons of the 19th century, beers meant to quench the thirsts of farm workers at harvest time, the Saison de la Senne is a beer of mixed fermentation. It is both bitter and aromatic thanks to particularly generous hopping, while at the same time developing a vinous and tangy character thanks to a blending with old lambic from the Cantillon brewery. Ripened in oak barrels for 9 months and listed at 4.3% abv.

330 ml bottle from Etre Gourmet, bottled 26 Mar 21. Orange, medium hazy body, with a big, frothy, lacing, white head.
Smells beautiful of the typical Cantillon funk, white grapes, lemon candy, apricot, some apple, moderate wood, some dough. Tastes also amazing, quite similar, a bit more tannic and wooden.
Medium, a bit creamy mouthfeel, with a quite lively carbonation. Finishes perfect, smooth, complex, tannic, wooden, vinous, quite dry, funky, citric, with grapes, stone fruits, apple.

I love this! This is the perfect blend of two of my favorite breweries, the Cantillon lambic providing the characteristic, rustic funk notes, while it has the perfect balance and crispness I love DLS for. The barrel aging is so well integrated, leading to beautiful, moderate wooden notes. Overall this is so smooth and drinkable that you could easily overlook how complex this is at the same time. Addictive! Score: 9 / 4 / 9 / 5 / 17

Received a glass of this by accident @ Chez Moeder Lambic Fontainas: we ordered “Zwarte Piet” and received the same unmarked bottle with Zwarte Piet written with a marker on it as we did when we did get the “correct” beer but to the waitresses surprise when she poured the beer she got a bright, slightly cloudy golden/yellow beer instead of the regular near black – she left us the glass & went to get the correct and to investigate what we got, which led to the conclusion that we just got “Saison de la Senne” – we split the glass between us three, declaring it unanimously a fantastic beer, supper happy that we got a free glass of this by accident – slightly cloudy with a white head, smell is Cantillon-y (first wrongly guessed 3F because I expected a Cantillon blend to be rounded, I figured this was Cantillon or 3F, after getting the “correct” nswer, I felt like an idiot & I should); lots of barnyard, quite fruity & funky, hay, zest (almost near to acidic), almost sweet touch in the back, honey-ish, taste-wise, I have no idea how this was fresh but at this point the lambic dominates so much (granted it tastes incredible) that this should be called a lambic instead of a saison, funky, sour, barnyard, hay, touch acid, touch funky basement, nicely blended sour beer, slight yeast, fruity, hint of white pepper, hint of honey, leading into a touch bitter finish which is like “aged hops” bitterness, refreshing, light, dry, crisp, citric, at this point this is basically just an incredible Cantillon (which is very, very, very far from a bad thing in my book), probably 2008 vintage

Very good dense white head, lace; hazy yellow beer with a green shine. Again lambic Cantillon nose, wry, with unripe grapes, lunaria and other green fruit. Little spicy bitterness, helping to relieve the expected acidity. Root vegetables and health spices, with again such a bitter-vegetable aftertaste, not unlike artichokes. Quite some astringency, wry, medium bodied, bit spritzy. Very special, but the balance is not always ship-shape. And I have grave doubts about a Saison, containing real lambic - old-style Saisons had their own spontaneous infections.
