Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens (ed: Weihenstephan denies this), “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness.

It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways.

“1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Pours bright gold into a bowl snifter. White head quickly subsides to hug rim. Slight malt to no aroma. Crisp with upfront sour wheat and a tart sour apple lactic finish.

Aroma of cream and and pineapple, some cheese and DMS. Milky yellow color, very thick white head, no lacing. Very sour lemon taste, with cardboard and rice at midpalate. The lemon grass finish sets it off nicely. I’m still a novice with this style, but I do enjoy sour beers. This one just seems one dimensional, but perhaps that is the style. I like it, but it doesn’t excite me that much.

Very dense white head, as whipped eggwhite, but not very lasting; verdigris-yellow beer. Fresh lemony-acidic nose, but with obvious (summer)grain as underbuild; slightly lactic ending. Again first lemony/citrussy, but with a backing as from a very fine, light consommé , stock-ish. Celeri, some grain; ending quite tart. Extremely refreshing, very titillating MF. A good Berliner Weisse is always a treat. But historic or not; believe it or not; I prefer the Schultheiss. Thanks, Seb!

Murky, yeasty yellow-orange body with strong carbonation emanating from the yeast sediment at the bottom of the glass. Thick, quickly dissipating off-white head. Aroma of tangy wheat, banana- crackery, with a dry, almost medicinal chalkiness. Sour, tangy body, lactic, with a light lemony fruitiness. Earthy and estery. Not much depth; the initial flavors simply fade away on the palate. Interesting, unique beer.

Nice, I tend to like this style. This is my 2nd one, and I’d say its just a half step down from the Berliner Kindl weisse. Cloudy yellow gold color, a little still in the glass despite a palate clearing carbonation. Minimal head. Aroma hints at a mild spiciness and minty wheatiness. Flavor is pleasantly tart, with a strong wheaty graininess. Finish is tart and light.

Pour is a cloudy yellow with a large white head. Aroma is faint citrus and maybe a little banana. Flavor is super citrus and tart with some sour apple. A different style of beer and not one that I would go looking to find all the time but it is a good summer refresher.

This hard to get in Germany bottle was kindly provided by DerDoppelbock. Milky yellow, low white blanket head. Acidic fresh, light citric aroma. Citrus buttermilk flavor, restrained tart, a hint of anisseed. Light body as it befits the style, sparkly mouthfeel. Dry cleansing finish with a slightly citric aftertaste. Very pleasant drink.

Bottle from Eaglefan538; Nose is wheaty like a hefe with a bit of light banana, and hints of citrus and tartness; very cloudy yellow with a blood red tint added and a medium yellow-tinged head; Flavor is reasonably tart, but not too much with some breadiness, and definate lemon.
