Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens (ed: Weihenstephan denies this), “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness.
It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways.
“1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt.The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

50 cL bottle. Pours hazy yellow with fully diminished white head. Light orange fruity and light citric note. Light yeasty aroma and also into the flavour. Light citric flavour mixed with a mild yeasty note. Ends yeasty and citric.

Bottle: Yellow pour with a large white head. Aroma is dry with grassey hops, light citrus, and a hint of grain. Flavor becomes crisp with citrus, a little biscuit, and some light hops. Nice. Thanks Jordan.

Cloudy, almost greyish-beige colour, like pear nectar. This is after a big head had frothed up and whittle slowly down in what had to be the most impressive audible show I’ve ever experienced in a beer. The aroma shows just a miniscule amount of that lactic, lemony character of the style and a lot more of footy yeastiness. Flavour is suitably tart, however the footiness doesn’t do it any favours, but the kiss of malt in the middle does. The malts then fade away to a puckering, limey finish.
Two things: 1) It looks like ass but I give a bonus point for the audio. 2) Sourness is right but not much else is.

Bottle at Ludwig’s Schnitzelhouse and Restaurant, Charlottesville. Pours a cloudy straw gold color with a very large head. Aroma is a bit weak, but the lactic sourness comes through. The taste is the same. This has a nice wheat/sour taste. The sourness is not overpowering, and balances nicely.

Bottle from Winking Lizard. Served with a cup of raspberry syrup which I declined. Pours a somewhat hazy yellow-gold color with a medium thin bone white head that diminishes slowly. Patches of lacing on the glass. Tart fruit, doughy malt and spices in the nose. Light-bodied and clean with a tart citrus and raspberry character. Mild spices and grainy malt flavors as well. The finish is fruity with a lingering tartness afterward. Overall this is pretty interesting.

Bottle courtesy of jjpm74: Poured a cloudy and hazy deep yellow color ale with some white hue also noticeable and a huge pure white bubbly head with some good retention and minimal lacing. Aroma consists of wheat malt with some sour notes. Taste consisted of wheat malt with some medium sour notes without much acidity. Full body with some good carbonation. Very well done, easily drinkable and I am just glad somebody tries to brew this though to get style.

Courtesy of Degarth. Pours a straw gold with bright white head. The aroma has some punch with fruitiness from apples, peaches and mango mixed with hay, grains and mild funk. The taste begins tart with lemon, mild burlap funk and grains. The experience just smooths out into the finish creating a refreshing sensation. Very nice summer brew.

Lovely white head that shows stronger retention than most berliner weisse. Mostly clear golden body with large bubbles in solution. Light lacing as well.
Fruity and full of lacto in the nose. Dry wheat as well, with even some soft honey notes from the malt. Light banana, but lemon and tangerine as well. Smells very similar to a hefe weizen, but with more complex fruitiness and just a tinge of sourness. To be honest, this and the last German berliner weisse I’ve had have been less "to-style" than the American ones I’ve had. The lacto, while more seemlessly integrated in to the German ones, becomes less distinctive and the line between a hefe and a berliner weisse are blurred. Which isnt very problematic, as the styles are very similar and a "to-style" version certainly does not exist. Still, this is unique and far different from the bone-dry, almost nutty, lactic, lemon/yoghurt versions I’ve had.
The flavor has a supple wheat softness and chewy nuttiness, with lightly tart acids and plentiful citrus. Delicate honey notes continue to balance, and some light banana joins the mix. Tight carbonation and no alcohol or flaws round out this vivacious brew.
