Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens (ed: Weihenstephan denies this), “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness.

It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways.

“1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Hazy golden coloured body with a thinnish white head. Aroma of lemons, banana, spice and a touch of bubble gum - nice! Light-bodied; Mild malty flavour from wheat and citrus with a touch of spice, some yeast and more banana flavours than in the smell. Aftertaste shows a nice mellow finish with some light alcohol, a dose of yeast and more mellow wheat characteristics. Overall, a pretty nice beer - definitely shows well in the summer heat, but the character complexity really comes out! I sampled this 500 mL bottle purchased from German Gourmet in Falls Church, Virginia, sampled on 07-August-2009 at home in Washingotn.

Bottled. An unclear golden beer with a white head. The aroma is sweet with light acidic notes combined with notes of malt, which also pretty much sums up the flavor. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

16.9oz bottle-pours a foamy white head and cloudy yellow color. Aroma is perfumy, husky grain/bread, banana. As the beer warmed, the aroma did become lemon dominanat. Taste is tart/acidic lemon right up front. Mid and after taste is tart/acidic/lemon/fruit, wheat-slightly sweet, yeasty. OK effervescence. Not my taste but enjoyable. Thanks to emacgee for picking this out.

Bottle. Pours a hazy gold with a lot of fizz and a two finger white head. Aromas are fairly weak... a little bit of sour apple, must, and wheat beer type yeast. Flavor starts off with an apple juice/hard cider like dry sweetness and then things get a little tart and funky. Carbonation is heavy and almost seltzer like.

Bottle from South Bay Drug. Hazy lemon gold color with a very large white head. Aromas of yeast and citrus. Medium body with frothy carbonation. Quite zesty in a citrus mode. Slightly lactic. Slighty bitter. Astringent. Puckerish. Probably prevents scurvy.

Re-rate 7/29/13: Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks zvikar. Cloudy pale yellow with a white head. Aroma of wheat, fruits, light graininess and some yogurt. Sourish fruity flavor, wheaty and somewhat lactic. Pleasant and refreshing. 7/4/7/3/14=3.5

(10/15/08) Bottle at Map Room in Chicago. Clear golden color with a medium white head that falls rather quickly. Aroma of fruits (some apricot, pineapple and citrus), wheat and a bit of lactic acid. Sourish flavor with fruits, citrus, some wheaty tartness and yogurt notes. Medium-bodied with very strong carbonation. A good refreshing beer but not as good as real Berliner Weisses (Schultheiss and Kindl). 7/4/7/3/15=3.6

bottle - Pours cloudy yellow with a two finger, somewhat fizzy head. It smells like yeast, wheat, and some of that funky bacteria. The flavor is tart citrus, wheat malt, and a little funk. It’s certainly an interesting beer and is fairly tasty. I found it too thin at first, but as it warms the flavor fills out better as is so often the case.

Pours with a large, foamy white head covering a clear fizzy yellow body. Aroma of hay, honey and wheat. Taste is lemony in the finish and quite refreshing. Taste is also strong on the wheat with nearly a touch of clove in the tart finish. Quite pleasant. Not as sour or tart as other Berliner Weisses that I have had. Lively bubbles with a dry mouthfeel.

Bottle. Tart, refreshing, light and full of flavor — a great summer drinker. Hazy, yellow body with a fizzy white, diminishing head. The aroma is malty with some grain. Notes of lemon, clove and apple. Light hint of yeast in the form of cobwebs. In addition, you can almost smell the acidity. The flavor is moderately sweet and moderately acidic. Very light bitterness. The finish is tart and lightly sweet. Medium body and watery texture with a lot of carbonation. Delicious.

(Bottle 50 cl) Courtesy of boboski. Very hazy pale golden with a dense, white head. Tart, youghurt-like aroma. Medium body with a soft mouthfeel. Piquant, tart and lightly wheaty accents with a whiff of yeast and citrus. Vague acidity in the finish also. Interesting, less challenging but more quaffable than your normal Berliner Weisse. 270408
