With its classic brown color, reminiscent of a monk’s tunic, Leön has a nice thick and persistent, hazelnut-colored head. At first smell, the fruity scent of fruit cooked in a wood oven fills the nose. Then, coffee aromas blend with woody nuances, which turn into fuller notes of chocolate as the beer becomes warmer. The heat of its 9% alcohol content immediately hits the palate, with a touch of sour cherries in brandy. This is quickly replaced by the taste of roasted cereals, which gently fill the mouth with notes of chocolate, cocoa beans and coffee. A rather sweet beer with a strong body, complex but very enjoyable.

Baladin Leön at Vrteška, with the ABV likely mistakenly written as 6.5%. Poured a misty brown body with a small off white head. Creamy aroma, caramel, rosehip, alcohol, toast and banana. So yeah, not the greatest but pretty adequate for the style. Meaty yeastiness in the taste on the sweet caramel, ending quite dry. Smells and looks better than it tastes really.

On tap at Stone Brewing Berlin. Served as ’Baladin Leön’. Comes with an amber color and a small white head. The nose is malty and sweet, later some caramel. Not very intense nose. Taste of malt and belgian yeast, full-bodied, some bananas and syrup. Nice sweetness at finish.

BOTTLE 75 CL as Leon. Hazy mahogany, small beige head. Dark fruit but not sweet, more like brown sugars, quite boozy. A bit thin, very faint maltiness, toasty, and clovy spice. Ok, but underwhelming, as most dark Belgians.

Jun ’16. A 0.75 l bottle, corked&waxed, as Baladin Leön. Obviously a palindrome of Nöel, clever. It poured hazy dark rusty brown body with quite a big and creamy head that dampened the aroma initially. It showed dark dried fruits, some spices, weaker anyway. Flavor was lightly sweet, dark dried fruits, strong chocolate note, caramel, grainy, bread, pepper (brewer’s signature I guess) wood, some perfumey spice. Pretty complex with notable alcohol that didn’t bother though, I understood it as a part of its Christmas character. Full bodied with long, lightly bitter (both grainy and alcohol bite) and sweet dried fruit finish. Quite nice Noël.
