The aromatic characteristics of the Japanese Sorachi Ace hops mix with a surprising caramel aroma brought about by prolonged boiling, which also gives a fascinating amber tinge.

Almost no head over cloudy amber beer. Slight cheesy note from the S.A., cookies with caramel and toffee, pineapple, bit herbal, aromatic. Dry flavour with some hops, and melanoidin-rich malty background. But overlying is a strange, just-not-sourish flavour that somehow seems not right. Together with the utterly flat aspect, and almost ditto MF, I fear something’s amiss here, and not just a headdestructive ABV. Faint fruity notes - pineapple and banana maybe, maybe some preserved orange. Cheesiness is there too, but even less outspoken than in the nose. Quite slick. Not B.I. Elav’s best try, IMO. Maybe just my bottle - bad luck?

Draft @ Brassigaume 2012. My favourite beer of the festival. Hazy orange, bubbly white head. Smell is a sweet lovely concoction of caramel, sugar, syrup, prune jam, flowers, solid malt base, some very sweet strong liquor feel to it. Sweet caramel, malt base, light prune jam, sweet strong liquor, touch pine resin, tropical fruits, mango, creamy, caramel apples. Softer carb. light oozy body – lovely.

Draft @ Brassigaume 2012. By far, one of the most outstanding Italian beers that day which does not diminish the overall quality of all the beers present at Brassigaume.

Bottled. A hazy dark amber beer with a thin yellowish head. The aroma has notes of hops, malt, caramel, and lemons. The flavor is sweet with notes of caramel soup, malt, alcohol, and citrusy hops, leading to a dry, bitter, and alcoholic finish. Thanks yespr for sharing.

Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of yespr. Pours a hazy amber with an off-white head. That lovely coconut smell of Sorachi Ace dominate the nose. Rich body, low carbonation, lots of caramel and exotic fruits - very complex. Rich alcoholic finish. Lovely - my first Sorachi Ace Barley Wine. 200612

14/04/2012 Domus Birrae (330ml bottle). Arancia, intensa, riflessi fulvi, schiuma quasi assente. Corpo medio, carbonazione soft. Davvero niente male.

Hazy amber color; medium head. Nice aroma, malty and hoppy, a bit fruity, light wood and vanilla. Good malty flavor, full bodied, with nice sweetness, and pungent hopping, helped by some alcohol presence too.
Very good. Drink it fresh.
